I'm trying to work out whether it's worth attempting to go and see some mates next week. Typically they're useless and haven't yet given me a definitive address but they assure me they'll be "somewhere between Alicante & Valencia but I don't know the exact place"

Now, seeing as Relks is ignoring my text (I know he's done Gib to Alicante, I'm sure he said c.4 hours) I'm wondering if anyone else would have a scooby how long it would take to get to Alicante/Valencia from Gib. The AA (bless them) reckon about 8 1/2 hrs drive to Valencia (my arse) and even 6 1/2 to Murcia! I find that hard to believe when I'm sure Alicante is c.4 hours and it's further on than Murcia is! A friend of mine, Javier, reckons c.5-6 hours to Valencia which sounds more like it but with so many guesstimates I don't really have a clue!

Any help would be appreciated....

I've got a recollection of driving Barcelona to Valencia in about 4 hours, and being fleeced at a series of toll roads. I remember having visions of having to hole up Valencia precisely because I'd spent everything trying to get there, the tolls were extortionate and seemed to be on me every 30 minutes. Must have driven Valencia to Madrid too, but can't remember it. Got no recollection of flying it or train, and since my mate completely bottled out of driving in Spain full stop, it would have been me that did it. Madrid back to Barca through Aragon took ages, but it was a long winding scenic route I elected (precisely to avoid said toll roads)

 I fear it's not really going to be practical - not for a night anyway. Flights are bloody extortionate though - I object to paying £300+ for a night on the piss before I even start drinking!!!

Get a map and a scale rule and work it out I reckon. All depends on the quality of the roads. I don't remember the motorways being busy, but certainly expensive.

It is quite a long drive from Gibraltar to Valencia:
780km

It will take more than 6h to make the journey.

It is a trip I would avoid to do driving a car.

SL, if you end up passing anywhere near Benidorm 09-13 Oct let me know and I'll buy you a beer.

Anyone else for that matter...

Cheers everyone - I was keen to do it last night but I'm not sure it's worth the effort! Of course if my useless mate could give me a bit more of an idea where their house is (well, I think it's between Alicante & Valencia...) it would be a lot more useful as she's not narrowing it down a lot!

Cheers Dessie - if I am anywhere near that region it'll be next week though, 5th to the 6th. Have a good holiday!

Cheers Merlin! It might be a piece of piss but I really can't be bothered with a maybe 6/7 hour drive (they're further on than Alicante, nearer Valencia allegedly) on my own - far too much hassle for one night!! Still, they've been threatening to come to Gib for long enough now - they'll have to make good on that!

The train network in Spain is rather bizarre and the lines tend to run more north to south rather than across the country. So it can be tricky trying to get somewhere via train, especially from my neck of the woods! There is a good station in Algeciras though - but the line pretty much only goes north to Madrid. I could go to Valencia via Madrid but it's really not worth it for a day or two - there are only 2 trains a day to Madrid and one of those is the night train that leaves around 2130 and gets to Madrid around 9am! It would take so long to get to Valencia it's just not worth it for a night. Thanks for the idea anyway!

DOM... no, that was a sarcastic remark i.e. "a piece of piss" all that way to have a glass or ten and then to drive back, no I think you have made the correct decision..... ;)
