Dublin

Cheers, nsdb. How long does it take to get a Revolut card? Would I be likely to get one before Friday?
Its instant, just sign up for it and you will get access to a virtual card for your phone and I think it was 2-3 days for the physical card to arrive. Might be tight for this Friday on the physical card but virtual card is live right away.
Signing up is easy and I have to say I was sceptical when my partner persuaded me to sign up ( she sent me a link and after my first 3 transactions of £5 or more she got a £60 cash bonus added to her card with no strings attached).

Another question:

Any info on the bus transfer from Dublin airport to the city centre?

My accommodation is in Dolphin's Barn Street. Is that walkable from where the bus stops?

TIA

I don’t know if the issues are now resolved, but Revolut had a reputation for customers being scammed (in 2023, 2,000 more customers scammed than Barclays, from a massively smaller customer base). So take care there.

If you have one, Halifax Clarity Credit Card has always had a good reputation for overseas use. No foreign transaction fees on purchases or cash withdrawals. Chase another good option.

Anyway, have a great time, its odds on you will - but you may not be sleeping much!

You can have the virtual card on your phone within minutes, and approval within a day. I never use the physical one.

It is definitely the way to go. I used it in Poland recently and it's completely painless.

Check out citymapper; you can get a bus direct from airport to city centre .782. off at Wellington Quay
Walk to Dame Street and get selection of buses ( 151, 27,56A 77A) to Coombe Hospital, then a minute's walk to your destination.
Costs a tenner.

It might be an idea to get one of these.

If there’s a few of you travelling together a taxi won’t kill you.

I'm trying to figure out when was the last time I was in Dublin. Orchidette would have been in her mid-teens and was competing in the All-Irelands so it must be at least 20 years.

It's sad that the only thing I remember about the visit was that it cost €7 for a pint of Guinness in a bar below ground level near St Stephen's Green. The pint itself wasn't even a memorable one.

Much more memorable is a holiday we did, staying in a cottage in Co Wicklow and using it as a base for touring. We went there because Orchidette was a huge fan of Ballykissangel so we had to go to Avoca and get the compulsory photos taken outside what fronted as Fitzgeralds bar.

I insisted we had at least a day in Wicklow town as I holidayed there with the boys' club and knew the place like the back of my hand. We stopped off at a tea shop up the high street and I was telling the family I was sure this had been a sweetie shop when I was here as a kid.

So we asked the owner for confirmation when he came to serve us.

Me: I'm just saying to the family here that when I came here on holiday as a teenager this was a sweetie shop. Is that right?

Him: No, this was a lingerie shop...

I've never lived that down.

(The guy was joking and didn't know what the shop had been 35 years earlier.)

Geee... haven’t been in Dublin for 35 years, last time was as a guest of good old Dominic Duggan of Army Bargains on Little Mary Street, for the Republic v England (1-1) in 1990, took me around a police station one night to see the cells, not sure what that was all about now, but had one of the best times ever the guy knew everybody.
I know the shop is still there as I googled it, but whether its still in his hands I dont know, as time went on we lost contact.
So if your looking for some Army Surplus DO whilst there, that’s the place :)
