This is a lot harder than the Stones one as Zep were a far superior band and had a wider range of great songs.

Tangerine
Dazed and Confused
Houses of the Holy
The Battle of Evermore
Kashmir

Oh really?

I think a lot of people might find that statement a bit hard to swallow, especially the "wider range"

not a zep fan admittedly. my missus was hit on big time by Jimmy Page many years ago. She couldnt stand him...

Zep were seen as successors in popularity to the Beatles even at this early stage

no TV performances..on the Beeb clip its mentioned that was their first tv appearance!...in a bloody interview lol...no official singles..and they were that big..no 1 band in the world as voted for..with no publicity..thats a feat in itself..look at the coverage the Beatles & Stones had in the 60's...no other band has got as big as Zep with so little publicity

you underestimate the Zep Clive..big style :)

Zep werent the beatles EC. They were what they were. Ploughed a furrow pretty well (i cant really judge hard rock myself) but not much beyond that

Curtis Mayfield and James Brown were two greats for me, but i wouldnt pretend that they went beyond certain boundaries

The Stones did to a fair extent. Good ballads (wild horses, angie) soul/funk (Miss you, Bitch) Reggae (forgettably), country and so on

I reckon we ought to start a forum CD-swap shop! Those with the Zep CDs they don't now like could swap for Stones, etc. Anybody like a couple of BAD COMPANY's?

never said they were the Beatles...who i also like by the way....but they weren't far behind them in the 70's re their influence on that era and beyond

if you remove the fact they didn't float your boat..their achievements are immense

the stones made some good singles..albums weren't as good..poor live act..muscianship not great..thats why they need another guitarist all the time..KR is poor..always has been

I like the stones..not knocking them..i just know their limitations..bought some of their stuff..but they didn't change anything re direction of music etc...they just another rock and roll band who were there at the start..bands like Cream and Zep took rock music to levels no one else had at the time.

Cream were a very important band..they invented arena rock when the equipment couldn't keep up with them..they were first band to use Marshall stacks in 67 and 68 for instance..they were the biggest live draw in 1968..took US by storm..hence when they reformed in 2005 the tickets went straight away for 4 nights at Albert hall. They were the forerunners to Zep...Zep were the 70's beatles re the influence they had on that era and still are having on young muscians today..they have a massive following

People that follow mainstream music ..ie chart music..do not realise the scale of bands outside that area tbh.

I never turned onto Led Zep - only liked Lynryd Skynrd or however it's spelled, for 'Sweet Home Alabama', which is a song I really, really still love and wish I could hold a tune to, 10CC for 'I Don't Like Cricket', and so on - many bands for just one feature number only. King Crimson for... uh....

To be honest, I prefer to listen to the unique Motown sound, great singers like The Platters, the Everly Brothers, stuff from around teen years into my 30s. I don't mind some reggae, but everything since like punk, trance, garage, house (is there a garden and potting shed, too?), Goth - nahhh. Repetitive and often just very noisy.

But how many Skynyrd songs have you actually heard? Sweet Home Alabama wouldn't even be in my top 10.

Im with Krizon. There are very few out and out rock tracks i like, but sweet home alabama and freebird would be two

They love SHA in the deep south, as i know from some wild bars in new orleans

REM are from the South too i recall. One of the only other bands i like. Similar nice swing to their stuff and that great southern character perhaps

thats true with many people who aren't into rock..they ant heard the best stuff :D

Clive..have a look at that clip and give me a critique on it..check out the drummer..probably rocks finest drummer..not many bands can play that good..full stop

I think everyone knows that modern music is shite, I think I'm one of the youngest on here, yet you will struggle to find me listening to music made after 1989 on a frequent basis.

To be fair if it's the South we're talking about it has to be The Allman Brothers Band.

The last clip?

Gritted my teeth and sat thru 1 minute of turgid boring heavy rock. The drummer? plods away. Hardly Art Blakey is he?

Some incredible albums have been made since 1990. Most of the best music from the last decade or so is hardly in the public eye but with the Internet it's not hard to find.

00s>70s for me.

plods?..JB..omg:blink:

you don't get rock at all do you? :p..he isn't supposed to be Art Blakey lol..Art wouldn't be any good in a rock group

oh well its not for everyone..then again..neither is the Beatles..Bach..Mary Hopkin..Prince etc

It's your age not the music. It might not seem as magical but at it's best some of the music around now is as good as it was back in the day. It just doesn't seem to matter as much to most people as they age though.

I will sit lumber up off the sofa for a good zap around to a load of the bands we've mentioned (I prefer to keep such frightening visuals private these days, though), and I did actually have an LS album years ago, Euro, when I had shelves full of all sorts, including JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP ("Blood on the scarecrow, blood on the plough... "), ROBERT CRAY, MARVIN GAYE, DONNA SUMMER, TINA TURNER, QUEEN, CHRIS REA and so on. Still dust off my JOE SATRIANI CDs for a belt now and then (Surfing with the Alien, etc.) but haven't updated him for years now. I've probably listened to hundreds of bands, bought several dozens over the years, but now find I just don't really bother unless there's a retro on tv.
