This discussion drove me to youtube some u2 stuff. God they are worse than i remebered.

Im an outsider looking in maybe but they are everything i hate about rock music. Boring, ponderous, plodding and miserable.

I think of the few post 70s "rock" acts i do like...REM with that superb southern swing in much of their stuff and Springsteen with excellent lyrics and a bit of soul and theres no comparison.

Who said they liked that vertigo thing? whats that all about? Dreary or what

Yes would say that losing my religion is as wonderful a single as ive heard this side of the Beatles. Imitation of life is superb upbeat stuff too with a nice touch of Beach boys.

Missus is massive Springsteen fan. Dont blame her. Always feel that he genuinely connects (unlike some pompous prats)

Thing thats strikes me about springsteen is that he is genuinely productive too. Im always baffled by these "musical geniuses" who trot out an album every 15 years or so. Mozart, Coltrane and the beatles were banging out quality almost weekly.

Hes covered a good range of sounds too. Country through to soul and rootsy american music (Tom Joad is a great album).

Its not entirely my music but theres always been a maturity and real quality to his work. Gutted that Clarence died last week

Just don't like his music. At least half of his lyrics must have the same back story as well.

I also find him pretentious (every bit as much as Bono actually). The difference for me is that Bono is in a different league as a performer.

Actually, hold on a second. Clive has a missus!!!!????!!!!

Yes. Someone that Peter Green (some say the greatest guitarist of all) was infatuated with. Certainly a looker. But thats end of. Dont discuss that side of life here

As a non rock fan again... bloody hell

Bono always struck me as someone who thinks performs as if hes in front of a mirror. Springsteen just goes with flow. Hes like James Brown

Pretentious? His lyrics are as real as you can get. Im baffled by that. hes about as grounded a rock star as i can think of

Disagree entirely.

Springsteen
I'm not an unemployed steel-worker from Pittsburgh, so his lyrics don't really connect with me. Dad-rock for saddos who like 'real' music, wear Wrangler jackets and eat Yorkies. Get a haircut.

REM
Inspid, clever-clever, Californian, art-house wank - still the daddies of the genre.

Bono
Cock.

U2
Stadium-rock, get-over-yourselves, parody of the rock-band they wished they were 20 years ago. Mullen has retained his cool throughout though.

Mozart
Pudding-faced Austrian c*nt.

Clivex's Missus
Comes with a pump and instruction pamphlet.

Mullen is a spoofer. Other than that, I cannot argue with anything there. I think Springsteen is a lot better than you think he is.

By the way, I think you will find that The Flaming Lips are the daddies of Californian art-house wank.

Neither band are from California, though.

I think Grassie gets bored in the summer - hence his wind up posts here and his ridiculous, but unfortunately successful, attempt to hoodwink people - me only probably - to back some middle aged Brazilian to win the F1 World Championship.
