Has anyone been to Goodwood's festival of speed?
Have been seriously thinking of going this year but need to decide in the next week as it is advance tickets only now (no at the gate tickets)

Definitely worth doing once if you like exotic motor vehicles. It is quite hard to see much of the hillclimb unless you have a seat in one of the small grandstands - not many viewing places elsewhere. We ended up standing under the trees down by the start, but the cars weren't really travelling at that point so it wasn't ideal. If you're not especially bothered about the hillclimb there is plenty to see, for example the Style et Luxe display or just wandering round the paddocks. It is all a bit unreal - true exotica which are way beyond the means of normal mortals - but nice to do at least once, on a nice day. It is very well organised, plenty of parking in the fields below the Festival site, and you can get close enough to the cars to take some great photos.

Once you've done the FOS I'd recommend something a bit more down to earth like the VSCC race series, especially the one at Mallory Park in August, when they have a race for Edwardian vehicles. Quite mad, and some of the drivers are great characters, and it is much cheaper to attend than the FOS. The NSRA Nostalgia Nationals near Stratford at the end of June is fun too!

I was disappointed by the Festival of Speed, someone mentioned top gear would be there- top gear it most definitely wasn't. You can get better stuff in the clubs of Sheffield :(

Martin!

To be honest we were looking to go somewhere to see some classic cars, we live in south Essex about 20mins from QE2/Dartford crossing, we thought there would be something going on at Brands Hatch as thats not far from us but there does not appear to be anything like that going on shrug::

We need to be able to travel there & back in a day, we wouldn't want to travel much more than 2, to 2 1/2hours, we can get to Crufts at the NEC in about 2 1/2 hours, so Birmingham would be about the max,

Where is Mallory park?

If you would also be interested in static displays of classics as well as racing, the Bromley Pageant is worth a look:

Bromley Pageant

They have an absolutely massive number of classics of a more down-to-earth sort than at Goodwood, but no racing, obviously, as it is held in a park in Bromley, SE London! Quite fun to be around when the display cars arrive as the surrounding roads are suddenly filled with all these 1950s and 1960s vehicles...

Otherwise, your nearest race circuit other than Brands would probably be Snetterton in Norfolk - just past Thetford. They have some historic racing this coming weekend:

It's a bit further to travel for you but a unique event so worth making a special trip for if the weather is ok. We went to this one year when it was absolutely lashing down with rain - the Edwardian race still went ahead despite all the water on the track, plumes of spray everywhere, terrific stuff!

Many thanks, OH has found some MG racing in Oct at Snetterton so thats sold :P

Like the Bromley thing aswell but they have no parking shrug:: if we went by train/tube it would take us half the day! will have to look at the logistics of that one :what:

The year we went to the Bromley show, we drove down from SE London and there was a huge visitors' parking area in the fields adjacent to the showground. Can't imagine that they wouldn't still have that arrangement in place as they get a huge number of visitors from all over. Worth checking, but I'd be surprised if this has changed. (Let me know if it has as we might want to go and this would definitely affect us too!)

The "one make parking" might be booked up by now - but that's another area altogether. If you have a "classic" car, you can apply to park in the show area alongside other cars of the same make. They get thousands of cars in that section and it is treated as part of the show.

I had a good look around the website but all I could find about parking was the nearest parking was 4.5 miles away shrug:: does seem a bit strange to have an event that size & no parking so perhaps I'm missing something!

Just called their general enquiries line - apparently there is parking in the field next to the show site as before for show visitors
