Guitarists

Just by the by.

I once found myself owning a demo 45 of Love Me Do, recorded in 1962 and it was unusual because in brackets on the label the songwriters were credited as ‘Lennon and McArtney’ (wrong spelling of the latter).

Being a big Beatles fan, I thought that should be in the Beatles Museum in Liverpool so I padded it out and sent it to them. I received a reply thanking me but telling me that, unfortunately, it had been broken in the post. I was gutted.

Even more gutted when I see how much that would be worth today – thousands.

Still, c’est la vie. It’s a story to dine out on, eh?

Jeff Back was amazing in The Yardbirds. But I haven’t liked anything he’s done since. Not sure if it’s a bloke/girl thing, but I’ve never liked Jimi Hendrix’s style of playing. I bought a Jeff Beck solo album that was recommended to me and I think I only played it once. There’s a documentary I bought for my SIL about all the session musicians that are/were so influential ( can’t remember what it’s called): unsung heroes of the musical world. Having said that I guess I’m just a folk fan who reveres people like John Renbourn! I’ve always thought the guitarist that was with Tom Petty is underrated ( can’t get my head round the fact that Tom’s dead). And Tony Iommi. Must be great to have been someone who has come up with a great guitar riff!

Hiya.

Talking of folk. I suppose you know of Ewan McColl. He was a famous folkie, who was Kirsty McColl's dad. He said he wrote the song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face for his third wife to be Peggy Seeger in 1957.

Can you even imagine how it must have felt to have such lyrics written especially for you? Incredible. Peggy must have melted.

Talking of those' unsung heroes': I don't suppose any of us have heard of Raphael Ravenscroft. He was the session man who played the sax solo on Baker Street. (the popular myth, for some reason, is hat it was played by Bob Holness). Ravenscroft's fee was £27.

Tom petty was a sort of surrogate dad to George Harrison's son, Dhanni. They were incredibly close, the story goes.

I think I’ve got City to City in the loft. Who’s the guy who sung on Dark Side of the Moon because Roger Waters couldn’t reach the right notes, but never got paid for it?
