Hawk Wing is dead

Sure there was a poster on here called Hawk Wing years ago. Turned out it was Declan Rix or Tony Keenan. Cant remember which.

He holds the all aged record for 7 furlongs at The Curragh for his National Stakes win as a juvenile. Draw at the wrong side at Newmarket and soft ground plus High Chapparal scuppered his Derby bid though the third was 12 lengths back .
An unlucky horse to be the same age as Rock Of Gibraltar and High Chapparal I bet he frustrated the s778te out of all at Ballydoyle .

Talented horse, but I was never really a fan.

Lots of horses are "unlucky" to be born in the same year as other horses (how many times did Excelebration see Frankel's backside at the business end, for example?).

Arguably wasn't given a great ride in the 2,000 Guineas, but a truly great horse would have defied that IMO, beaten fair and square in The Derby where IMO he didn't really stay (yes, the third was 12 lengths away but the also rans weren't up to much and for me he just didn't see it out) and had things his own way in that Lockinge.

But it's a game of opinions, we all have our differing criteria for greatness and none of us is categorically right and none of us is categorically wrong (though there's always plenty of ****s in this game ready to tell us we are).

Fair to say he showed a rare depth of talent once every season, a Gallic Warrior of the flat .
The Lockinge could nearly have been called off with high wind and rain , Hawk Wing ran so fast he dried himself as he ran . Maybe he just too much out of himself when right that he could not repeat the dose regularly.
