I'm thinking of decamping to Croatia for three weeks - End May/Start of June. We like independence so the plan is to fly to Dubrovnik or Zadar and rent a beach house/apt for 2 weeks and rent a car and tour for the last week. I have never been there before and wonder if any of you had and would offer any learnings/advice on the nicer places to stay or visit?

I can't help unfortunately, An but would love to hear all about it when you get back. It looks like a beautiful country.

I've been there twice - a small town called Varazdin in 2002 and a few days in Zagreb last summer. I'd say you're on the right track by heading to Dubrovnik. Certainly, there isn't that much to see in Zagreb - I'd really spend no more than a day or two there. Have heard nothing but good things about there. I would suggest that if you're spending the last week on tour that you actually drive up as far as Slovenia and visit Lake Bled and Ljubjana - two places well worth visiting, one picturesque, the other one of the nicer capital cities. Could be a good place to end your trip.

Went to a lovely place called Cavtat, just south of Dubrovnik, last year. Can`t speak too highly of Cavtat or Croatia. A beautiful country with fantastic coastline.
The first time I`ve been to Croatia but I loved it so much we`re off there again in July. This time we`re trying Rovinj on the Istrian peninsula.

I saw a holiday program on Croatia. I don't know where exactly they were, but it looked very nice.

Hope that helps.
