International Racing

In simple terms, Frankel: had he used his limited stamina earlier, he'd probably've been beaten further.

I think Doyle had an extremely difficult job, he had to go with an early pace that was right on the edge of what Pinatubo could cope with if he was to last home. As it turned out he did last home and Doyle could probably have gone just a touch quicker which may, or may not, have been enough. Certainly, as you say, he couldn’t have gone near the pace without being beaten further and I think Doyle may have got it wrong , but only just and certainly not enough to warrant the criticism that has come his way.

They finished the race fast. He was never going to pick up the winner who wasn't stopping either.
Regardless of trip, you don't give that much rope when pace is not strong.

Look, he made a mistake, it happens.

Amazing the number of top horses that bit the dust over the weekend and got nowhere near their running. Strengthens my conviction (might be my wallet talking) that horses are going over a bit early this year.

Nah, you made the mistake (along with plenty others) in assuming he was a miler, and like a few of those, you'll float any excuse to cover your own ineptitude.

You don;t have a great record of backing winners yourself.

Edit: in fact, didn't you back the 3rd in this race - that seems more inept than backing the 2nd to me. Very poor behaviour on your part.

Dear God!

How have I been wrong about Pinatubo!

2000 Guineas - Watching brief (not convinced he would have improved).
SJP - Was correctly in Palace Pier camp.
Jean Prat - Correctly with Pinatubo.
Moulin - Watching brief again as I have previously stated he would be suited by the Jean Prat trip.
Truth is it may be somewhere inbetween.

So this notion I have been championing Pinatubo is amusing. It's called analysis. So which part of my previous comments are incorrect?

Did they finish fast?
Was he given too much to do?

Recall you saying the Sussex would be ideal for him, for starters.(And I told you he wouldn't go near it).

Yep I said Goodwood is possibly one place he could overturn the form but PP would beat him anywhere else. But no surprise he goes to France to run over what is probably his optimum in the Jean Prat.

Hope that has cleared that up!

Ok so going down this route now.
I backed One Master and Port Guillaume which lost if that makes you feel any better.

Best not say I backed Stone of Destiny and Chindit though

I've been out of commission for a few days. Is it true that Mogul ran EACH of the last five furlongs i under 12 seconds on Sunday?

The brother had phoned me to tell me this so I presumed he must have read it somewhere. I found it on the RP site.

It says:
He clocked an overall time which would have won every Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe since the war bar those of Peintre Celebre and Danedream, while he ran sub-12 seconds for every one of the final five furlongs.

That does sound impressive, I have to say, but the brother also said Serpentine wasn't off an inch (he backed the winner so no axe to grind), which would appear to be backed up by the comment in the same article:

his performance was nothing to get excited about with a view to the Arc. That said, Christophe Soumillon was clearly under orders, both to take a lead and not to overextend his partner after a 71-day absence.

That was always my worry with the bet I took (7/2) about Serpentine the other day, whether he was there to win or not. The price suggested he wasn't but markets can get such things wrong. The brother is adamant Serpentine wasn't off so he's run very well by the look of it.

Aidan O'Brien made it clear before the race that Serpentine would come on for the run.

Conditions were very fast at Longchamp on Sunday, the 5f course record was broken by Air De Valse, who ran 55.34 seconds, fast by 0.28 seconds per furlong. Mogul on the other hand ran 12f in 2:24.76 seconds, an average per furlong of 12.06 seconds, faster than standard by 0.48 seconds per furlong (figures taken from the Racing Post).

By the way, the one race of the day not run in a time faster than standard was the Prix Foy.

Those suggesting afterwards that Stradivarius should forget about running in the Arc were off the mark, he ran a perfectly good trial for the race. I don't think he's the most likely winner, but he is well capable of matching other high class stayers such as Ardross, Oscar Schindler and Order Of Saint George by getting into the places.

If we had a race that turned out like last year then Strad could run a blinder. Clearly didn't want to give him a hard race in the Foy.

Love looks worthy fav. Ground could be her undoing.

RP have time based ground as firm for this meeting, with a going correction of - 0.56 spf.

Kieran O'Sullivan of Sky Sports Racing wrote an incredible article on US racing in yesterday's Sunday Independent if anyone read it.
Titled " Nothing focuses the mind like the threat of extinction " it is quite a read and has lessons for all racing fans.

The daddy Frankel wins the virtual Cox Plate. As if this was in doubt!

9/2 gift from the gods.

Anybody know how SP bets are settled in the Melbourne Cup ?

I bet on the TAB when I was there, pool based but have never bet on the race with a UK bookie and opted for SP
