I suspect it was a combination of the ground being loose on top and coming too soon after the Juddmonte. Unless one believes that Beethoven has improved significantly since the Sussex or for the step up in trip both RVW and Twice Over did not run to form indeed both did not pick up as they had at York .

I think RVW would be much better staying at 10f - he stays it well on good ground and the competition is much stiffer over the mile. Indeed probably the best performance of his career was in that very fast run Eclipse against STS .
