Irish Derby

The ground found out a lot of horses right enough.
As Grey mentioned, the Derby field were a very average looking bunch in the parade ring.
ROTW it was probably one race too many in a relatively short time on very quick ground.
Great to see quick ground for once Derby weekend; 2004,2006 and 2010 were the most recent. Hats off to JSB who held Trading Leather in the highest regard despite Dawn Approach being in the yard as well.

Irish Derby is now a very substandard G1, French don't care about it, not much coming from across channel. 3yo form is very erratic, might be another poor bunch of 3yo, 2nd half of season will determine if they are

Too close to GP de Paris for French now.
On paper this looked the best Irish Derby for some time; what 3yo colts were missing?
A bad winter and spring may not have helped but all up for grabs from now on.
Hopefully there are most than just good 3yo milers.!

Will we see Telescope and Kingsbarns before the end of the season? At least we've heard a bit from SMS, but the silence from Ballydoyle is deafening.

Intello, Flintshire, Kingsbarns, Morandi

I think this years in not a bad crop but this Irish Derby was a bad edition, maaybe the ground was too firm for some of the principals

With both Ocovango and Flintshire in his yard Fabre seems content to keep Intello to shorter distances for the time being - has suggested the Jacques le Marois as his next target. The Grand Prix de Paris could prove an interesting race this year if any of the Irish horses join the French. Could JB be so bold as to run the admirably tough Trading Leather so soon?

It's been mentioned before that the changing of the distance of the French Derby from 12f to 10 1/2f since 2005 has undermined the status of the Irish Derby. Looks like a contributory factor.

By the way, Aidan O'Brien seemed to suggest after the Irish Derby that it was great that Bolger had won it. It can't be a good thing for the status of the race that the lack of competition had allowed Ballydoyle to win it year upon year.

Sky Hunter. Form is rock solid over 10f and improvement to come over a mile and a half. Amazing the likes of Trading Leather and ROTW are shorter for the Arc.
