Irish Derby

My namesake Marbling well punted into favoritism earlier on the Curragh card, having first run for Ger Lyons after switching from Andre Fabre's yard.

Is my Irish fan club piling on?

Lol thanks for that!

They said earlier in the year he'd be a better horse over 12F with decent ground, Euro.

Some people are taking all the form literally.

Fair enough. I've seen 200/1 shots place in this race from O Briens yard.

If often pays to think outside the box with his runners in this race...

Fine if you're taking 25s about a horse you think should be 16s. Van Gogh is 12s though.

And honestly I don't care what they say. Most of the utterances from that stable are garbage.

Yes I concede that this race has a history of dodgy results but backing Van Gogh on the back of that makes as much sense as backing Dubious Affair in the Plate because of Hancock ******* his secretary.

That was some performance to pick up Lone Eagle who wasn’t stopping. Very game winner.

Well done HL backers. Good winner. I just wonder if Frankie went a tad too soon on Lone Eagle.

Take either horse out and we'd be talking about an impressive winner, though.

Amazing to pick Frankie’s horse up like that. A curious ride on the winner IMO driving him early on to be up with the lead and then shuffling back to midfield

IMHO WB tried to lay up with yhe pace and couldn't. It was only the crazy fractions set by the 2 leaders that allowed him to swoop at the end.
Pleased for both jockey and trainer, though.
As Slim predicted, fav ran a stinker.

Yes, and as someone once said, George Best's brother was useless at football

I'll be pleased for you if you're proved right, Maxbet. I like when people with strong opinions are proved right.

Innisfree's brother is useless...first off the bridal...Didn't stay...

On the Epsom Derby thread I questioned whether High Definition would stay. The figures were there I was told.

But looking at the bottom line of her pedigree I don't see much that shouts out stamina. I also see plenty of speed elements. The great granddam was that very fast and very good filly Sonic Lady. Yes the second dam, Lady Icarus, was the result of her being covered by Rainbow Quest, but she was unraced. Interestingly when this unraced mare was covered by Galileo she produced the miler Bravery. To a less stamina-laden sire, Fastnet Rock, she produced High Definition's dam Palace who ran in two Oaks but could manage only a 7th and a last place. She never won over further than 8.5f.

Of course High Definition's Dante and Irish Derby runs don't prove he doesn't stay, but for now I'll stick to my thoughts that he may find 12f too far even though those numbers suggest he would. We may find out one day.

...first off the bridal...Didn't stay...

One doesn't mean the other must follow.

Quite the opposite I'd have thought.

HD was never looking comfortable at any stage yesterday. He was well beaten long before stamina would have been a question.

It looks to me like he hasn't trained on although he's maybe just a big backward type that needs more time.

I'll be leaving him alone for the foreseeable.

He nearly fell over after 2f...all at sea after that.

Reported to have clipped heels after two furlongs and never happy after that. It can happen. A horse loses its footing and then loses his confidence.
Have to say I backed the winner just because I thought he looked great in the home schooling VT. But it was a good performance and I don’t think Frankie did anything wrong on the runner up. He was going extremely well so he sent him on in what looked like a winning move. That the winner caught him said more about the winner than that it was a poor ride.

I agree Jinny; I thought Frankie had stolen it and his horse kept going further away from the third right to the line.
Wm Buick was that bit away form the lead so has to have some engine to haul him in.
I do hope they meet again .
High Definition is a big gander of a horse that might need another year to come to anything.
Kevin Manning said the going was too fast for MacSwiney, though he possibly looked overtrained; time will tell.
