A superb meeting that has set out the blueprint for what is to come at Cheltenham. The spectacle over the two days shows exactly why so much effort was put into it going ahead. I haven’t enjoyed two days of racing like that in a long time.
Goes from strength to strength and Cheltenham may well become an afterthought in years to come.

Always had a lot of sympathy for Mr B O'Neill - must be the unluckiest jockey that's ever been to Cheltenham
  • Chinned on Winged Leader when P Mullins went over the whip count (Billaway)
  • Chinned on Stumptown in the Kim Muir (Angels Dawn)
  • Just beaten on Discorama in the NH Chase (Le Breuil)
  • Unseated in last year's Kim Muir when fancied
  • Might have had the ride on Mount Ida in the Covid Kim Muir
Pretty sure there's more. Have been on just about all of them. Not sure he's ever had a winner at the course.

The GC is a completely different test. I'd be afraid of F2F who would probably be fav if he's supplemented but I'd have no qualms opposing him. I can't believe Willie was banging on about the race putting GDC right for Cheltenham - get Paul on GW.
Would make for a nice race 4 for them

I'd have concerns over what a race like that will do for them both too

Really impressed how GW kept on bar all that he done during the race to implode

The Winged Leader loss cost me 500k in the ITV7. Me and 3 others so would have been a split pot anyway i think

Didnt realise the severity at the time as i had it right off with Vauban, State Man, The Nice Guy and A Plus Tard. Had Elimay after it all as well for the absolute lot. My best ever betting day. I long for that feeling again.

If you could own one horse after the 2 days racing, who would you all pick

I'm drawn to the brilliant novice hurdle yesterday

You could argue any of the three but I would pick Ballyfad

A horse who needs further and fences, but is that good still. Most exciting

And to rob and edit a phrase a poster here made famous

Let Mark Walsh ride them all

Gaelic Warrior - have always loved him since I stood next to RR watching him dive over the last in the Boodles and lose out to Brazil. He should have won and it was clear that his owner adores him. Plus that John Durkan was some race visually.

The runner up in the Juvenile.

Shes going to be a belting mare

INTWUT another horse to suffer the curse of the Gold Cup, relieved he got up after tired fall last
If they supplement F2F he is about 5/2fav, with JB next in betting

Absolutely brutal. I remember Patrick Mullins did something similar on Rathvinden vs. Ms Parfois a few years before. No disincentive unless they lose the race.

2022 a brilliant year. For some reason the last two have been dreary for me.

I think Barry O'Neill was also meant to be on Mahler Mission in 2023 when he came down at the 2nd last in the NH Chase, but switched to the KDTA horse late on. Guy can't catch a break.

One horse bought before the weekend was Ballysax Hank , by Paul Byrne.
He ran more than respectfully in 2m 1f handicap chase and will be interesting in Grand Annual/2m4f handicap on better ground.
It may take quite a few horses quite a long time to recover from their exertions .
Those that stayed away e.g. Irish Panther may be the winners in the long term.

The Young Pretender strikes again on Gaelic Warrior, how did he win the National? Just pipped in the King George, Gaelic would go close in the Gold Cup but not with Mullins jnr. The horse has not been out of the first three in nineteen completed starts, just reaching peak as a chaser.

Ruby Walsh saying afterwards on Road to Cheltenham they’re hoping she’ll be a potential Champion Hurdle mare next season.
Could be a sure thing in the Boodles, you’d worry they’ve blown any mark though, she was on 132 I read. Be suprised if shes 140 with the Irish tax.

Probably let her run in the Triumph of which she’d also be a bet with the winner making the market.

Not a betting race for me but I think the 1425 Fairyhouse could be a great battle between Oldschool Outlaw and Place de la Nation.

Bit of a toss up between the two but I prefer Oldschool Outlaw on my ratings , plus even though Place de la Nation was 5th the Cheltenham Triumph Hurdle Stakes, there has been no previous instances of any runners coming from that race to this Fairyhouse Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle Stakes 2m 2f 40y Grade3. Where as although unplaced in the Aintree Mares Standard Open National Hunt Flat Stakes 2m 209y Grade2 in April, runners form that race have a 4 out of 8 win strike when coming to this race.

Will the market show the way ? Oldschool Outlaw is currently 1.79 and Place de la Nation 2.48

Will Irish runners at Aintree and Sandown dwindle with the Irish trainers title in the air?

If Gordon take the Irish National, it could well be on.

Id say they’ll both be keeping a few back.

Real winner of all this is Dan Skelton.

I remember when they put Saint Sam in it off 139. Narciso Has was on 144 before yesterday. You'd have to deduct 7 for the mares' allowance, then the winning distance yesterday, plus the Irish tax. 140 might be about right - definitely worth waiting for the mark before getting involved.
