Irish Gold Cup

While Stellar Story is presumably being aimed at the Aintree Grand National, could connections resist a serious tilt at this weekend's Irish Gold Cup?

The handicapper has been harsh, giving him back only 1lb this season for three underwhelming runs. However, Sunday's conditions could be the key. Based on social media images and reports from an capall's loft, he is set to encounter heavy ground—a scenario he has faced just twice before.

The first instance was a victory in the Albert Bartlett, where he beat The Jukebox Man by a head, with Dancing City a further 7.25 lengths back in third—form that reads very well. His second heavy-ground outing was a narrow neck defeat by Better Days Ahead (OR 153) in a 3m Novice Chase at Navan last February, with the heavy-ground specialist Three Card Brag another five lengths back in third.

The caveats are clear: he can be slow to start, and his jumping sometimes leaves much to be desired. Yet, he is guaranteed to handle the testing conditions and run to a mark in the mid-150s, with potential for improvement. Jack Kennedy is the probable rider.

Aintree remains the likely seasonal target, but with proven heavy-ground form beating a current Gold Cup horse with a price of 7/1, can they pass up this opportunity? At 50/1 for the Irish equivalent, he presents a compelling case.

Paddypower:

2/5 for the meeting to go ahead
7/4 for it to be cancelled

The latter is value

I'd make racing going ahead 1/10. People are overreacting to the videos of water on the track. Once it stops raining, the water will drain away. They can't reschedule for a week later, which is also a week closer to Cheltenham, and run on heavy ground anyway.

Why have you said in your previous post that the Irish Gold Cup is unlikely to go ahead when you make it a 1/10 shot?

Is Inothewayurthinkin too big at 10/1?

Cromwell stable kicking into gear and it's really getting to the point where its now or never with this horse. If his run is a repeat of the John Durkan / The Savills then surely he has absolutely no chance in March?

I think he'll be that on the day.

Dublin Chase could be a race to cut up, outside of Marine Nationale I don’t think there’s a lot of quality in this division and doubt he’ll be as vulnerable as this for the rest of the season. Energumene and Found a Fifty will both like the ground, though Elliot’s form atm would be a concern, still 3 places in Ladbrokes too
