Is Racism Alive And Kicking In Leafy Surrey?

Yes, my solicitor has been advised Krizon, and she is going to send the buyer's solicitor a letter today. She has seen this all before, and although she said much the same as Songsheet ie. that this bloke may have achieved what he set out to, but she said there are certain things I can do should his comments cause the sale to fall through and once I get some feedback from the police.

In the meantime, she said I would have to be careful that I don't libel him if I do decide to make contact with this blokes employer's or the FA etc. B) Like you rightly say, it may be better that she writes to these people although I don't really want to be charged £75 a letter for something I can do for free.

Several years ago, I took on a rookie builder that tried to charge my disabled friend in excess of £20k for putting up some new guttering. He went to prison for 6 months once I had pulled off a little stunt where she didn't part with a single penny.

Although so many people opt for the "quiet life" option, I am afraid I would rather take these people on. Righty or wrongly, it's just in my nature I'm afraid.

For anyone remotely interested, it looks like the sale may be proceeding. The buyers cannot have a full structural survey carried out until Jan 2006, so they are having a provisional valuation (?) survey carried out next Tuesday. Fingers crossed they have not been put off. As I haven't met the people concerned, I have offered to meet up with them to explain the circumstances surrounding my complaint to the police.

I have, this weekend sent the police an e-mail asking what has happened, if anything, and I look forward to receiving their "update".

Meanwhile, the Estate Agent has been paying regular daily visits to the property and he says all looks well from the outside.

They are going to put "under offer" on the "for sale" sign outside, which may spark another reaction.

I have now lived in Surrey for nearly 2 years and I still can't believe how racist people are.

People are quite cold down here!
Craig, something you appear to have in common with the racists is the sweeping generalisation...

No, and after this particular neighbour showing his true colours, living in this house is never going to be an option.

I had an e-mail back from the police today, after I had e-mailed them asking what action has been taken, and they have confirmed they have done absolutely nothing.

Sounds like racism is taken seriously when you make the initial call, then they ask that you to make a statement (the very next morning), and then after that, putting film in the traffic cameras is probably deemed as far more important. :nerd:

It will be great if I find that my house has since been burned to the ground to stop the "onions" moving in. Thanks for your help in this matter police.... not!

Brian, how long is your hose, will it reach 6 miles for instance? B)

I may need to call you to direct some large quantities water in the vague direction of my house if I hear it is on fire.

kathy

i have experience of police inaction

try planting a free copy of the metro in his house

that may prove to get a better reaction from our boys in blue

i hope u manage tio sell the house to the couple and they are of an origin he despises and that they are at least 5 stone heavier and a a foot taller than the neighbours

any verbals from them (the neighbours) and they might turn his lights off

its about the only debate these people seem to understand

So sorry to hear what you've been going through, Kathy. For what it's worth, there's little doubt that racism remains a lingering, festering sentiment among a significant minority. You can't, of course, legislate racism away - as others have said, it's only through positive experience and interaction that the fear of "difference" gets overcome.

I used to live in south London, now I'm in east London and I'm not exaggerating when I say that as a white, British person I am now in the minority. Most of the white faces here come from eastern Europe - the community has a majority of people whose ethnic origins are in the Indian Sub-Continent but with a growing number born here and only the older relatives having been born outside Britain.

Does it bother me ? Not especially - I don't like the eastern Europeans that much - I find them arrogant and selfish and that's probably racist of me. Otherwise, there are plenty of families, the streets are pretty safe and the corner shop is always open and always has a copy of the RP for me.

Perhaps your "neighbour" ought to try East Ham for a few days...

Thanks Stodge and Prince Regent for your input.

It looks as if the sale is proceeding, and as soon as that is finalised (assuming it still goes ahead to completion) then I will make sure Mr. Racist realises fully the error of his ways.

Strangely enough, still nothing back from the police. I wonder if the Sergeant at Epsom station knows of this man, perhaps he has had been issued a warning before and this would be the last straw. Who knows? One thing is for sure if the police have decided not to do anything, they will need to let me know why and in writing.

I visited the house yesterday and came face to face with Mr. Racist. I gave him one of my "looks" and he just looked at the ground and walked back into his house. I have arranged a meeting with the prospective new owners on Friday morning, who have evidently said I did an admirable thing reporting the bloke to the police. Bless them.

Fingers crossed this means that Mr. Racist has had a rethink and will now leave the buyers in peace. She has offered to go round with a bottle of wine to introduce herself after we have met up. Not sure if that will inflame the situation or not. She sounds like a lovely lady.

Now that'll be all Poles, Hungarians, Rumanians, Serbians, Croatians, Czechs, Slovakians, Slovenians and Bulgarians wiil it? That's hundreds of millions of arrogant selfish people.

My view would be different. There are arrogant people and selfish people in every nation in the world. Some have both attributes. There are also generous aand humble people in all of these countries. I think that it is fortunate that the latter outnumber the former everywhere, otherwise the world would have evn more problems than it does have. People who live in al nations have many other characteristics too - some good, some bad. Not one nation has a monoploly on either.

What stodge says about East London is nothing new . It has always been where immigrants have congregated before moving on

I met the potential buyers today and they are absolutely lovely. I explained what had happened, and have given them the name of the officer I reported the incident to - just in case it flares up again. She works for the local council and is going to investigate exactly who this "neighbour" is.

For anyone interested, the large wardrobe that was in the house that I was desperate to get rid of I sold on e-bay today. It's the first time I have sold anything via this method, and assuming I get paid and the chap comes and collects and helps dismantle, I will be doing this again. It was so easy.

My boyfriend also sold a transit van on there today too to a tack shop???

It'll probably be used as the equivalent of the AA - a mobile tack emergency service. Y'know, your stirrup leather goes five miles from nowhere, and you haul out the mobi and call them up!

To update you the police got around to visiting him about 10 days ago to take a statement from him, and within a couple of days his house was put on the market. I wonder if that's just a coincidence?

Thanks Gareth. Mr. Racist confirmed (to the police) that a conversation took place but his recollection of the content of the conversation is totally different from mine. Strange that. :) The police are taking the whole thing very seriously and apologised for the delay in interviewing him but as no physical violence took place, my complaint was not deemed a priority.
