Is this really what's behind the unrest?

Would you say any Barristers and Surgeons hold the same opinion.

I wouldn't know. I don't come across them.

I would imagine some do, in which case I would find them equally depressing.

The context of the item above was an article referencing the connection between racism and lack of education but I now recall discussions with an American couple on holiday in 2016. The guy was a retired electrical engineering consultant, his wife a retired university professor.

They were Trump supporters but the only political argument they could voice was that there were too many immigrants coming over the border from Mexico. When I casually asked how they thought the economy or Medicare were going, they couldn't offer any opinion other than that the economy would be better under Trump and Medicare was syphoning money out of the economy.

The real shocker for me, though, was that she was a Philippina immigrant.

Like a lot I would imagine LUKE. If you don't agree then there will be some category you fall in.
It's embarrassing some of the drivel spouted for just stating the obvious.
After 12 years of living in London I am back in Ireland for the last 22 years.I absolutely love living in Ireland -a lot of the best things we have money cannot buy.The population of the Republic is now just over 5 million having been 3.5 million when I was at school.I would not like to see us become a country of 7 million in the next 20 years.

I remember during one my uni lectures the lecturer said something along the lines of:

If you're in your teens or early 20s and aren't a socialist there's something wrong with you and if in your 60s you're not conservative then there's something wrong with you.

I'll be 69 next month but I wouldn't call myself conservative but I can think of people I wouldn't mind seeing lined up against a wall and machine-gunned.

Americans are different -when I first arrived in London I would regularly go to Speakers Corner and listen to Americans talk about how their government stole taxes from them.As I keep saying on the Trump thread there are no good guys or gals in the Presidential election -Harris has said nothing about the worst genocide of my lifetime over the last 10months.

I understand this.

If you are someone who can see the grey areas in politics, and these people tend to reside in the centre, the far left will try and perceive you as someone of the far right, and the far right will perceive you as a 'leftie'.

One word. Tribalism.

We are in the age where you are supposed to be and wanted in either one camp or the other, binary politics.

The centre ground is now effectively a place of neutrality.
Good point.

If you aren't a socialist in your 20's you don't have a conscience.
If you aren't a Conservative in your 60's you don't have a brain

My take on that is we all start off Young and idealistic but as you get older it's all about family.

When the net immigration of the UK is only 1% of the total population (2023 figure) then the chances are you don't have to worry about the population of Ireland, I don't think.

I have Irish citizenship so I might come and join you some day ;)

I know but as with all things in life its complicated. My sister has Serbian neighbours and for the last 2 years they have given my youngest €20 at Christmas because my sister is a Good neighbour.I reciprocated a couple of months ago by giving their kids a serious amount of sports gear -I also have a top class children's bike for them.

That Djokovic is a stingy sod!

73 and brainless, me…

I'm fiercely protective of my family but I want to see everybody everywhere safe, secure and with a decent standard of living.

Politicians are actively getting in the way of that.
