Jockey News

was there that day. It was a mad result, but not as mad as waiting with a lad I was drinking with while he stopped some fella slapping around his missus. By the time we got to the car park we’d lost our group and had no idea which of the hundreds of buses was ours.

Taxi…

This is what my good friend Dr Pat had to say about this momentous day:

It puts the cherry on top of a wet, miserable Monday… Sending best wishes to the wealthy dodgy man indulging himself through wealth, while others of substantial talent are work riders.

Im half disappointed that Slim or Ian haven't tried to make an edge out of this. Maxwell is selling all his horses as he doesn't want to own them if he doesn't ride them. If Maxwell is the equivalent of a 10lb penalty then potentially on their few first runs for new yards under more capable pilots there should be a chance they are all now well in and at least for there first couple of runs might be worth keeping an eye on.

I'm simply not having it that "The Max" was even an ounce per ride inferior to McCoy in his prime and I definitely won't be looking for value bets post dispersal when his former mounts start being ridden by people who know which way to be facing when they climb aboard!

Something in your eye Ian ? Wink wink.

There is also a high probability that he’s soured every last one of them.

That said, it would be a fun thread to follow.

A mate of mine did one called "a touch of the magic Johnsons" following horses that came out of Howard Johnsons yard when he packed in/ got shut down. His claim was he was one of the last of an old fashioned era of trainer the pre Martin pipe brigade and anything coming out of his yard would improve. He did well off it as I recall.

Disappointed in this. I had a rather twee vision of all of Maxwells horses spending the rest of their lives in happy retirement, standing in a field under a tree chatting about ‘the good old days’ like Black Beauty and Merryweather at the end of the book. Sigh….

DaviEs!

If you're going to insult me (again!) you could at least spell my name correctly!

Peak Maureen tonight - I'm almost tempted to ask for the cauliflower cheese recipe.
You really don’t. I was using up the last few spoonfuls of some instant cheese sauce ( still working my way through our pandemic stockpile…) and tried to eke it out by adding far too much liquid so it’s a bit of a gooey mess. However it means that next time I will have to make cheese sauce proper which will probably end up as a lumpy mess instead.

Why was some fella slapping your friend's missus?

Had a cauliflower cheese crisis when I returned home from the gym last night. I had asked my mother (80yo and formerly an excellent cook but struggling these days so I do pretty much all of it) to cook more cauli to add to the previous night's leftovers as I had made way too much sauce. She was sitting at kitchen table in a state (had managed to pour a glass of wine) gloomily saying she might as well not be alive any more as she had dropped the cauli cheese on the kitchen floor - (dog was delighted actually) and there was not enough for us. It was fine but it took some talking to reassure her - this is happening more regularly sadly.

Anyway I came on to say that all sauces are instantly recoverable from lumps using a wire whisk. In fact when I make any flour/marg based sauce I don't even bother with a roux. I just fling the liquid, fat and flour together and heat gradually whilst whisking. I never get lumps. Works every time! And so much easier.

Whisks are like culinary magic wands aren’t they. I thought I was the only person in the world who started making banana bread during lockdown and now I can’t live without it ( I’ve always got some bananas being ripened especially for it). But I only recently started using one of those big whisks to mix the egg with the sugar and butter. I never even owned one but Mike has one that was his mum’s. Not only that but, unlike other things that are a pain to clean a quick whisk in the washing up bowl and they’re spotless. Going to attempt some custard later on so will have a whisk handy. Sorry about your mum.

Pity David Maxwell didn't have a whisk; his critics may have been silenced.
Fair play to David; he is self made and self spent.
Poor Fred Hutsby got away with murder the day Istabraq beat him at Festival .
David wasn't so lucky ; wishing him all the best.

Some of them are retiring Maureen, so keep the black beauty dream alive :) most of the others are well in their prime, so will probably go on to get bought to still race.
I never had an issue with him, wouldn’t know if there were any shady happenings and I don’t bet enough to worry about his abilities. Came over well when interviewed and I thought he was a way better advert for racing than a lot of them !!

On the subject of Jockeys, does anyone have an opinion about JJ Slevin
He now seems to be riding Simon Munir & Isaac Souede horses ( Double Green )
How do you rate him as a jockey ?
