Laptop to Router

I have a linksys broadband router and a new a laptop, how do I get them talking to each other. If there is password involved I don't know it.

There should be a network cable with the Router - hook the laptop up to the router with this cable.

Open Internet Explorer (or any other browser) and type in 192.168.1.1 - this should get the configuration screen of the router up

Currently I have a cable from the back of the router to my PC. If I unhooked this and shoved it into the laptop, typing in those numbers - would this do?

Also, where do I type in 192.168 etc.

If you already have a PC that is working on the internet, just unhook the cable from the PC and plug it into the laptop, give it a min and the laptop should pick up an address from the router and you should have internet access.
 
Thanks QZY. Using the cable it worked but I do need it wireless, for my Daughter's bedroom in order that myself and her music are separated.

I can manage to open the router 'config' screens. I found the wpa key but although the laptop tries to connect with the router, it does not succeed.

Any ideas - MR2
 
Is there a physical wireless button on the laptop? - If so, make sure Wireless is turned on. You should have a Wireless icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Right Click on this and go to View Available Wireless Networks - it should pick up your Network. Select Connect and enter the key. That should be all there is to it......
 
Much appreciated, QZY. You put me on the right trail.

It turned out that my router, set up by my brother, only allows connection with specific mac addresses, regardless of any password.

I realised this, after ploughing through every set up screen on my router config, found the 'MAC register' on the router config page (not easily found) and then grasped that the MAC address is the physical address, it was plain sailing.
