Michael Barrymore.
Graham Norton.
Do I detect a theme here? [/b][/quote]
I should hope so, unless I've misread the title of the thread?

Reeves and Mortimer are excellent.

True, the high point of their career was Vic Reeves Big Night Out. People judging them based on Shooting Stars is unfair.

My nomination would be Jim Davidson.

Les Dennis. When your own Agent sells you as:

Comedian & Former 'Family Fortunes' Presenter

is says it all really.

I find Borat hugely offensive and unfunny.

Seeing a bit of this type of comment

Its like finding Alf Garnett "offensive". It completely misses the point...

Borat is a well overdue send up and welcome attack on a certain group of people with certain beliefs which any civilised person would find deeply offensive

Now that sounds very po faced doesnt it?

No doubt its not politically correct to have a go at this community, I mean, the Ken Livingstone and the Clare Shorts of this world believe we should "listen to" and "understand" them....

And I think that you have got him wrong too, clivex, but in a dfferent way. In the same way that through your example Alf Garnett Johnny Speight was on the surface attacking all sorts of targets, in fact, as we present day sophisticates know, he was attacking those whose views Alf shared.

he was attacking those whose views Alf shared

mmm..thats precisely what (jewish) Sacha is doing with Borat of course

Borats rampant and laughable anti semitism is actually not that much different to some of the stuff published by mainstream press and media in the middle east. (see the MEMRI site) and spouted by various Imans.

The sexism and homophobia are clearly spot on too

I would dare most of the JD haters on here not to laugh once at one of his live shows.... and im not a fan, but i know i would

Pretty sure i could watch Vic Reeves forever without laughing though....

Rik Mayall is another one ive never liked much

By which 'mainstream press and media in the Middle East' exactly, clivex? By non-mainstream, of course, but that swings both ways with equal lack of perspective. Please name and shame the MAINSTREAM Middle Eastern editors guilty of anti-Semitism, rather than just critics of Zionist expansionism and the West's lack of will to stop it. You might like to throw a few Western mainstream media names into that hat, too, while you're at it, in the interest of balance.

Cohen brings a lot of edge to his work, behind the buffoonery. It's not always comfortable (although Ali G was more spoof than ridicule), but that's the mark of effective satire. In fact, I'd say he was more of a physical satirist than an outright 'comedian'. (I'm entering this for inclusion in Pseuds' Corner.)

I can't say Rik Mayall entranced me, either - he always seems to be grandstanding for himself, rather than the character he's supposed to be playing.

Spot on

Very very vain i always thought. Not appealing in a comedian

http://memri.org/bin/articles.cgi?Page=arc...a=sd&ID=SP85505

and take a look through the rest of this site K. everything on it is verified

Come on now

Its hardly a secret that anti semitism and pure racism and bigotry is rife and officially tolerated throughout the muslim world

But satirising (and in some ways humiliating) the vile views of many in that part of teh world is very welcome (and seemingly extremely popular)

And im not Jewish btw

In 'Zahra's Blue Eyes,' airing weekly on the Iranian Sahar TV channel, the "Zionists" are graphically portrayed as kidnapping little Palestinian children and harvesting their organs. Traditional antisemitic stereotypes are interwoven in the series, such as Jewish racial superiority, as well as anti-Israeli political propaganda.

Sahar TV is currently broadcasting the historical drama series, 'The People of the Cave.' In a recent episode, the Jews are portrayed as maliciously abusing Christ on the cross and as bribing the Romans to turn a blind eye.

'Al-Shatat,' originally broadcast by Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV channel, is currently being aired on the Iranian Sahar TV channel. It portrays the Jews as controlling the world through a secret global government and as being responsible for all the ills of the world, through political, economic, and sexual conspiracies, war-mongering, and political assassinations. Blood Libels — such as the slaughtering of a Christian child for ritual Passover needs — are graphically depicted, as are gruesome executions of transgressing Jews and of non-Jews alike.

Borat would be proud

Clivex, you said MAINSTREAM - ermm, not sure what you class as mainstream media? I have publications like Gulf Daily News, Arab News, any amount of Maghreb, Levantine and Gulf publications, radio, tv etc., in mind, not the equivalent of BNP Weekly or Neo-Nazi Monthly. Quoting from the more extremist fringes may bolster your particular mindset, but fortunately I'm aware there are many Muslim extremists just as I am of their liberals and moderates, so next time you use the word 'mainstream', please use it in the context in which it's most understood and accepted.

As for Christ's death being laid at the door of Jews, that's hardly anything new, is it? I believe a certain white, European chappie called Adolf promoted that viewpoint without a hint of a mosque in sight. And not to mention the Christian faith, too: would you like to consider that, and rail against a back catalogue of anti-semitic Popes? And the RC Church's singular lack of attention to the murder of Jews during the Holocaust?

You keep casually throwing the words 'Jewish' and 'Israeli' around as if they're the same as 'Zionist', which they're not. One can be a Jew and not the least bit Zionist. One can be a Jew and not be Israeli. One can be a resident of Israel and not Jewish. One can be an Israeli and anti-Zionist. One can be extremely Zionist and not Israeli. Maybe when you've sorted that out, we can discuss this very interesting area of the Middle East more cogently? Preferably on its own topic heading, though, as although the issue does have many comic overtones, most of it should be played as tragedy.

No

Thats in the past.

nothing to do with Borat

Ok. Borat is an example of an extreme bigot (maybe......) but so was Alf Garnett and no one was suggesting that all londoners held the same views

Its hardly a secret that anti semitism and pure racism and bigotry is rife and officially tolerated throughout the muslim world

Are you suggesting that isnt the case?

Could argue this forever, but surely you must know that the muslim world is a long long way from being liberal and tolerant....

Sahar is an Iranian TV station available on satellite, and not seen in Iran. It is funded by the IRIB and has religious and political programming.

Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, or IRIB, (Persian سازمان صدا و سيمای جمهوری اسلامی ايران, Sāzmān-e Sedā va Sima-ye Jomhūrī-ye Eslāmī-ye Īrān) is the Iranian organization in control of radio and television.

Seems pretty "mainstream" to me

Interesting its not broadcast in Iran. I suppose its the equivalent of the BBC World or whatever

Laters... I'm off to donate a pint of blood now. Put it off until the Wacky Races, aka Haldon Gold Cup, was over, but must dash.

"A pint? Why, that's a whole armful!" :o

Clivex: I think you can safely discount the beloved Rep. of Iran from anything mainstream, unless it's by Iranians (and boy, there are a load of 'em!) in exile!

Sir:

How entirely unfunny - but not for the crowd watching The Secret's Policeman's Load of Old Bollocks tonight - is the repetitious use of f**k, sh*t and the increasingly, sadly, fashionable c**t. If anyone says the latter to my face, be aware of imminent GBH, delivered with a raucous laugh, of course. Pathetic - what a sad state for a lot of 'comedy' to be in, relying on endless playground swearing.

I don't like to hear "comedians" swearing. Occasionally it can be funny, especially if the humour is based around it, but I'd prefer that kind of humour to be kept to places other than on national TV. I like to watch comedy with the family and if I find the humour or language in poor taste I find myself switching to another channel as the entertainment factor has been removed for me. I don't want my daughter exposed to certain stuff.
