Was there 2 guys on the comedians that used to impersonate Ian Paisley? I seem to remember one saying to the other "Why did God give the Arabs the oil and the Irish the potatoes" to which the other replied "He gave the Irish first choice".
:D :D

I was in Ireland a few month back and like black people being refused cabs in New York, I was refused a cab because I was English.
As someone who spends quite a lot of time visiting the country, and who has done so over many years, I have great difficulty in believing that. So you'd better start by telling us whereabouts you were when that "happened".

By the way, black people are not refused a cab in New York. New York is another city that I have been fortunate enough to visit fairly frequently and not only is it a most cosmopolitan city but you'll find if ever you go there that most of the cab drivrs are either black or Hispanic themselves.

- turns out Chris Rock wasn't paranoid after all.

Hi Brian

I was reffering to jokes made by said comic, you're right to assume that I've never been to New York.

The incidents happened several times around the Temple Bar area during the Punchestown Festival, normally after eleven o'clock.

I wasn't bitter. By talking to the local's and reading about the relationship between Britain and Ireland at the local library, I gathered that I should at least expect some nasty looks.

Then I can only assume that you were rather the worse for wear and in danger of soiling the cab's seats, which would be the reason that a cab driver in Dublin (or anywhere else, come to that) would refuse to take you rather than your being English.

And, by the way, it is against the law to refuse a person based on race, disability, or a destination in New York City. A taxicab driver is required to drive a passenger to any destination in the five boroughs. Any would be passenger can make a refusal complaint by calling a hotline on 3-1-1.

Hi Brian

Contrary to what you suggest, I was stone cold sober on the two nights I walked back to the hostel and on the night I was full of craic, I found a cab no problem.

Oh, so why would Chris Rock lie to us? :brows:

Might I also advise you, Kotkijet, that if, by some chance, you do manage to get a taxi the next time you're in Dublin, never pay the full price. Always pay about 33% less, wink at the driver, and tell him you won't require a receipt.

Funny thread but on a serious note:

“That Dáil Eireann:

notes the following matters of grave and urgent concern:

— the latest statistics reveal that suicide now accounts for 50% more deaths annually than road accidents – 444 last year as against 293;

— suicide is the most common cause of death among 15 – 24 year-olds in Ireland, and the highest in this age group of all 25 EU States;

— the suicide rate in Ireland is rising faster than in any other EU country, and the rate among young females doubled between 1992 and 2000;

— the highest rate of suicides over the past five years is among young men in the 20 – 29 age group;

— in 2003, 11,200 parasuicides, or attempted suicides, presented at hospital Accident and Emergency departments across the country;

— the correlation between suicide and factors such as unemployment, living in poverty, bullying, relationship break-ups, legal and work related problems, alcohol and drug abuse, physical or sexual abuse in childhood and social exclusion;

Unemployment, poverty, social exclusion... makes you wonder why millions of Africans and Asians carry on, and all without dozens of well-meaning charities and helplines to hand, doesn't it?

According to the news it`s marching season in Ireland now. A few questions:

1. Flutes and sashes. Mmm time to grow up?
2. What is the point?
3. Does it help to be gay?
4. Why cant both sides march together to cut down on the number of marches thereby reducing police costs and the hardship caused to normal people who dont like listening to flutes and badly played drums?

How's it going Gearoid?
Hello my scottish friend. Nice bloody tipping on Saturday. Any Poker?

Things arent bad at all. Gambling wise I'm lucky if I hold my own since my purple patch from October to Janruary last year. The low point being, thinking I was sensible and going home at half time in the European Cup so I could celebrate my fortune made that night!!! Lost a packet!!

What about yourself?
