Mg Rover Goes Into Receivership

There wasn't too much fuss when Fords pulled out of car production in this country a few years ago.

Anyway, there are plenty of other car plants in the UK whose products would-be Rover customers can purchase instead.

Hi Ven

Yes I agree, but it's the work force of Rover that will suffer, and as my original post said I would not wish redundency on anyone, even if they do make crap cars.

Cheers
Trevor

Absolutely trevor - they have been lions led by donkeys who have been busy lining their own pockets .

Redundancy is bloody appalling especially for those who have been in the same trade all their lives . It is fortunate that under this Govt there will be proper retraining schemes and support and an economy where we have close to full employment unlike under the Tories when a whole generation of men and women made redundant in the 40s were on the scrap heap for life .

Hi Ven

True life example - ME

Worked for LG Philips for 26 yrs, never lost a days work in 10 years +, 50 years old (almost), good honest worker !!. On July 23rd I will be redundant, why?
LG decide that we have no future at Durham as we cannot make a PROFIT on our TV tube sales, why
They have opened a new plant in China to produce the same tube as Durham and they PREDICT they can make a PROFIT.
Durham have been told that it is NOT the workforce that is to blame. just the economic market and we cannot compete with China.
Despite being worldwide sales (3million) for the Cathode Ray tubes amidst the boom in the current market for LCD/Plasma (which by the way lose their colour after approx 5 years) We have no future.
Despite the Durham workforce getting reject levels down to less than 500PPM.
Despite being able to sell a real Flat TV tube for less than £30.
Despite being able to transport our product cheaper to Europe.
Despite our main customer (Jabil) saying they will not except China tubes as the quality is inferior.
THEY STILL CLOSE US DOWN.
So where are we now, the govt have given us a budget of £750 K for training and this has been matched by our union
We have an agency on site to HELP with our training etc. One of my lads had a one-to-one with a guy today and asked what the possibilities of getting his HGV driving license, he was then asked IF he had a job guarantee if he was to be given the training, as he said no to this question the man concerned said that he could NOT give him the go ahead for this training. What employer is going to give you a job as a driver if you have not got a license for God's sake, these people are NOT real.
Anyway twist over, it's just that I took exception to Ven saying he was glad the Rover plant was to be closed and the workforce was to blame. I only hope the same fate never comes Ven or anyone else.
I honestly dont give a damn who's fault it is, we can argue all day lond on that subject, I just feel very sorry for those who will suffer in the end.

Cheers
Trevor

I've been in a position where a company's gone bust, and I've also seen many jobs in IT (my speciality) get exported to India (where they're crap but very cheap).

I've never received any taxpayer's money, just got on with things, like most people whose livelihoods have been adversely affected by competition either from within the UK, or from abroad.

Ardross - lions led by donkeys? Donkeys led by donkeys more like.

Venusian - i don't think that is fair . The workers at Longbridge have improved productivity . BMW cherry picked the Mini they had developed .

BMW.AUDI..VOLKSWAGON..ROLLS ROYCE.

All belong to the "vaterland"

JAGUAR is now a part of FORD (Germany) and Ford Germany is part of The FORD corporation of the US of .

MERCEDES BENZ are now part of the CHRYSLER GROUP of the US of A

My original point was that ROLLS ROYCE and JAGUAR were no longer British.

Of course a the MINI is also an ex Brit.

:D :D

Hi Ven

Sorry to hear you have also lost your job overseas, I too have not claimed any benefits/taxpayers money in my working career and I too will just have to get on with life. I just find it rather strange that anyone can actually be pleased that someone has lost their jobs, whatever the reason, I'll bet that you and your collegues were not doing handstands when you were given the news of closure.
I hope, but I doubt, that all will find alternative employment.

Regards
Trevor

derek

dosnt jaguar belong to ford whom the last time i noticed were american

and hasnt the ownership of mercedes now passed from the flick foundation to chrysler also amercian

I never mentioned Ford but i was sure that Ford GMBH purchased Jaguar. I could of course be wrong.Jaguar are i believe still Manufactured in the Uk.

Mercedes and Chrysler are now part of the same Group, again,i am not sure as to the circumstances or the percentages involved.Mercedes are still manfactured in Germany.

I shall amend my posting accordingly to reflect only the loss of Ownership by the UK.

Ford does own Jaguar . For all its ownership however the German economy is in serious trouble with mass unemployment .

Ardross.
Remove the 17 million Citizens of East Germany that Germany took on in 1989 and things would be a little different.

Thats the way it is though, they will get through it.

Having lived in Both countries for many years,i am satisfied that i have made the correct choice, although the Government are hell bent on dumping on their poorer citizens.Something that they picked up from the UK.

They are also a net contributer to the EU and,as far as i know there are not many of those.

They have the € and that is not as bad as you guys think.

What else is there to crow about over here.

It is very clean.

The Health service is great.

Pensions are Great.

Germany is very central for travel.

The cost of living is cheaper than the UK.

We don't have Blair over here.

We are not a puppy dog of the usa.

Apart from that,it's rubbish.

Oh the interest rates are ok as well.

Reunification was undoubtedly a political rather than an economic decision . Is there much crossover from West to East etc . Can you still tell whether a town or city was originally West or East German ?

Although my family are German on my father's side my experience is limited as the family left Munich lock stock and barrel in the 1890s and as far as we know no family remains , I haven't been there much though I fell for Cologne when I stayed with a friend there in the late 80s.

I think that the East German citizens made the decision,of course it then became political and,of course hugely economical.Still being paid for, partly by the German Work Force who pay a percentage of their Salary each month.

Most of the larger population centres are now up to speed. On the other hand the smaller towns and villages are still at the 1987 standards.

One has only to leave the Autobahn and drive around 5 kilometres to see it.

Many, many years will pass before Germany is economically re-united.

Köln is indeed a beautiful place to live and my Family and i are very happy here.

unification was a very poor economic decision purely political

derek

re mercedes they are now i believe farming a lot of work out to china for components

but imust say i agree koln is a nice place bonn and heidleburg are also very pleasent

I can't believe it!

The pair of you?

Teutonic or what!

All the nice German people i know, deny any German connections with the names

Shadow Leader & Ardross, although they mentioned that he names have a horsey connection.

Could be from a family of Haflingers

:D

Hey, I'll let you into a secret, Derek.....Shadow Leader is not my real name!!!! ;) :D

And Haflingers are a Norwegian breed..... <_<

Shadow Leader.
1874 is the date.
The mountains of Sud Tirol is the place.
Josef Folie is the breeders name.
A male foal was born.
Josef Folie became known as the founder of the Race.
The name of thevillage was HAFLING.
The race was used for dragging and carrying goods.
The Haflinger has a fantastic reputation of being a honest and true horse.

If you require any more information about the Haflinger i would be happy to provide it for you.

Shadow Leader.
Graciously accepted.

I have looked at my post and can't find anything that linked Haflingers to Germany.

The Haflinger reference was made because it is a very beautful animal and i thought that you would have appreciated being with linked it,you being such a beautiful lady, allegedly,i hasten to add. :D

I can't be bothered to read all of this thread, having sat through the first couple of pages. Anyone who thinks that the bailing out of MG Rover is a party political issue is no student of recent history. Governments of both colours have pumped money into the automotive industry for decades. Most of uit - though far from all - has been wasted. The reason is simple, the internal combustion engine has for too long been central to Britain's economy.

Take the example of the late charmer and conman John de Lorean. The Callaghan government gave a £55m contribution to Mr de L's lifestyle - Mrs Thatcher added another £30m after her accession.

From what I've heard, it's the police as well as the auditors who should be looking at what happened in MG Rover.

My mistake then Derek, I thought that was what you meant. Yes, they are very striking animals....and thank you for the kind words, flattery is always received well!!!!
