From the scoring:

Placed points will be given for every Grade 1 conditions race (6 points for second and 4 point for third place).

I suppose there's an ambiguity there - does it go purely by placing, or do you need enough runners to justify the place i.e. 8 or more for a third to count; 5 or more for second to count?

Quite rightly you have the last word, but if 4 turn up for the King George for example , the third one home gets no points even if a month before the race it was 20/1 !

I agree -- if your horse is 2nd in a 4 runner race, you get no points, but the 1st gets the full whack of 10 points.
If the 2nd gets no points, why should the first get the full amount?

Basically, there could be just 4 runners because of the strength of the top 4 versus what hasn't been sent there because the trainers figure there's no point in taking on the top 4.
So, a good horse has seen off some competition before the race ... and gets nul points.

Besides, what have the betting rules to do with it?
The number of runners doesn't affect the prize money either.

It looks a difficult question only if you take a betting view, which, imho, you shouldn't!

(Star Luck came 2nd in a 4 horse race, btw: just in case you're wondering.
