PRIMO BACIO

18/4 Newbury
Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Registered As The Fred Darling Stakes) (Group 3) (Fillies)
7f, Class 1, £25,519.50
Going: Good

Here’s what Ed Walker had to say before the race:

“Primo Bacio has been doing nothing but impress me all spring and I’m excited about getting her out on the track today. It is an incredibly hot renewal of the Fred Darling and I see she is priced as the 100-1 outsider, I’m not too bothered by this but it is a very big ask. I believe she will run very well, but will she run well enough to achieve any black type remains to be seen.”

Run well she did and I doubt she will see 100/1 again. Hollie Doyle held her at the rear of the field until the 3 furlong marker when she started moving through the field with some ease until, inside the 2 furlong mark, she was badly checked (see below). It took Hollie until the furlong pole to get her going again and she finished strongly to grab fourth. She would have at least earned her black type without the interference.

“An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 2 furlongs out involving WILD IRIS (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Frankie Dettori, ILLYKATO, unplaced, ridden by Ben Curtis, and PRIMO BACIO (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Hollie Doyle. The interference was found to be accidental as WILD IRIS (IRE) hung right-handed as ILLYKATO shifted left causing Doyle to have to take a significant check.”

Johan - Spring Cup.
Ran a blinder today' on ground too fast for him. Confident a decent prize awaits, the first time he gets some cut

TECHNIQUE

20/4 Epsom
Blue Riband Trial (Listed Race)
1m2f, Class 1, £17,013
Going: Good

Technique got involved at the front in a sustained battle with Uncle Bryn from the 3 furlong mark. She got her head properly in front at the furlong mark and looked to be heading for home from there since they had both pulled a couple of lengths clear of Wirko who seemed to be treading water. He, however, lit the afterburners with half a furlong left and Technique was headed in the final strides.

Reportedly, she is heading straight for the Oaks but, although she showed great tenacity and courage here, I’d be surprised if she proves of that class. A notch or two lower and I reckon she’ll feature.

The Aul Dubliner .
Ran a nice seventh in an all aged maiden at The Curragh Saturday at 150/1 when stable had the 80/1 winner.
Finished just 4 lengths off runner up and stable trained a certain Slim Chance a few years ago so definitely know the time of day.

BOUNCE THE BLUES

Lingfield 8 May

Novibet Chartwell Fillies' Stakes (Group 3)
7f, Class 1, £34,026
Going: Soft

It might well be my pocket talking, but I think Bounce the Blues should have won this. She was not fast enough away and got stuck on the rail behind horses. Tried for a gap two furlongs out - no joy - and again - no joy - nearly through a gap a furlong out when the winner rolled across and shut it leaving Bounce the Blues to get going again. She closed up in the last half furlong and took second, but was still 3/4 length down at the line. The stewards don’t think it affected the result - together with all the other trouble she got into, I do.

An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race following interference just inside the final furlong when the winner, AXANA (GER), ridden by Jason Watson, interfered with BOUNCE THE BLUES (IRE), placed second, ridden by Oisin Murphy. The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved AXANA (GER)'s placing as the filly appeared to be holding BOUNCE THE BLUES (IRE) at the line, and the ground and momentum lost was less than the three-quarters of a length by which she was beaten. Watson was suspended for 2 days for careless riding for allowing his mount to drift right-handed without timely correction causing Murphy to have to take a check off heels and switch left-handed.

I suspect someone else is training the horses these days. They seem to be doing better.

Runs in the 1.45. They might end up with a nice mark.

The ex H H Aga Khan owned horse Zarzyni now trained by the in-form David Barron, looks to have a great chance. An unlucky in running sh head defeat by Jabbarockie in The Scottish sprint cup at Musselburgh, Jabbarockie has since franked that form cozily under a 3Lb penalty, with an all-the-way win at Chester. Came From The Dark who was a further sh head behind in 3rd in the Musselburgh race has since gone up a further 9Lb for his unlucky sh head defeat behind Lazuli at Newmarket.
Definitely looks like a 6f horse and bred to get slightly further, Beaten only 2 Length's by Lope Y Fernandez at the Curragh over 6F as a 2-year-old. Does look to be real value at 7/1 generally, 10/1 bar, for a horse that appears to be at least 10Lb well in against a lot of first-time out challenges...

Non Runner

Thought I'd put this here...

Cheers, BJ - had a small bet, but not convinced there's enough cut on the staight course.
Also bet Shelir ew @ 12/1 as insurance.

Aye, Shelir mugged on the post last time as he (or should I say his jockey) got caught out.

NAHAARR

12 May York
Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes (Group 2)
6f, Class 1, £56,710
Going: Good To Soft

Drawn 2 Nahaarr was inside the winner Starman (4) but was slowly away and switched right towards the centre racing in the back group. He made progress between 1 and 2 furlongs out having been switched left and back to the inside of Starman. Challenged strongly for the lead 1 furlong out and moved into the lead briefly as the battling pair pulled clear of the rest.

Tom Marquand was not best pleased with himself for his initial switching about and then for going a tad early. He thought he should have won. Nahaarr left some top performers in his wake and only went down by a neck. He can surely find a win.

His target is obvious. He'll reoppose the winner at Royal Ascot.

Runs tomorrow, reet, 2:40.
Johan (btn 7.25l) ran well enough considering the going was changed to good before the race; won't have harmed his future mark and he'll pick one up, as soon as he gets some cut.

DARK MOON RISING

York 14 May
Constant Security ebfstallions.com Maiden Stakes (GBB Race)
6f, Class 2, £8,100
Going: Good

Reviewing the 2yo race at York yesterday I was intrigued by a horse running greener than grass where the penny seemed to drop late on. Probably not one to risk money on yet, but one to keep watching development.

It was Dark Moon Rising who was slowly away and had Tom Eaves working hard on him soon after. Seemingly bemused by the pace of it all he dropped to a bad last. Tom kept working at him and he got moving over a furlong out and finished quite well - albeit only seventh - despite wandering about all over the place. He might not have been an ugly duckling that turned into a swan during the race, but at least you could see his feathers start to poke through the down.

14/1 Bingo!

CARDIFF

Thirsk 15 May

A potty little race given the talent on display all over the place today, but the search is for potential winners not just talented performances.

This was a debut run for Cardiff and she very nearly pulled it off. She came bursting out of the pack with about a furlong to go and made up 3 or 4 lengths on the winner (and moved further away from the pack). She lost out on the bob and was in front half a pace beyond the line.

She should be able to win a race at this level, probably over a bit further.

NEPTUNE LEGEND

Nottingham 18 May

Neptune Legend cost 350,000gns as a yearling and was given a good education by Oisin Murphy. He was a bit squeezed for room 2fur out, switched left a furlong out and contested with the winner, but he was not given a hard time when the winner went ahead with a bit in hand in the last half furlong. He will surely come on for the experience.

Can’t believe Jason Watson was banned for 7 days for not trying when his horse careered across the track and lost all chance at the start. He would have had to half kill the poor thing just to get it properly in the pack and what would have been the point of that.

BOND CHAIRMAN

Sandown 27 May
Coral "Beaten By A Length" National Stakes (Listed Race)
5f, Class 1, £14,461.05
Going: Soft

A hot race with the top two rated (so far) two year olds well beaten - Boughey blamed the ground for Navello - and the winner in a muck sweat and careering across the course in the last half furlong, but winning easily albeit flashing his tail.

Bond Chairman was only fifth, but it would have been better (unlikely to have bothered the winner) but for being chopped a furlong out. Before that he had seemed to be taken by the heels when things warmed up, but he suddenly shot forward like a bolt from a gun only to be thwarted when Navello was switched to the inside and cut across him. Quite why the stewards made no comment about it I don’t know. He was up in grade and didn’t look out of place.

ZAAMMIT

Salisbury 29 May 2021
Federation of Bloodstock Agents Maiden Stakes (Class 5) (Turf)
3yo+ 6F Winner: £3,240 (14 runners)
Good to Soft (Good In Places)

Zaammit had been racing keenly up with the leaders and looked full of running when he was hampered a couple of furlongs out and lost some ground. Got himself in the clear and beginning to challenge when he had to be snatched up over a furlong out when two horses came together right in front of him. All momentum was lost and that was that. He would certainly have finished very much closer than sixth and is worth keeping in mind at this level.

Approximately 2 furlongs out, ZAAMMIT, unplaced, ran onto, and had to ease off the heels of MARIGOT BOY, unplaced, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.

An enquiry was held to consider interference approximately 1 ½ furlongs out, when HIMYAN (IRE), unplaced, ridden by William Carver interfered with ZAAMMIT, unplaced, ridden by Jason Watson. Carver was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he had allowed his mount to drift right without sufficient correction, causing Watson to take a significant check off heels.

62 rating may be high enough but 29 runners and drawn 1 so 66/1 a sporting ew minimum stake prospect.
