Some big odds-on favourites with the bookmakers this year. I'll have to consult my Oscars guru to see whether there's any value around.

Some big odds-om favourites with the bookmakers this year. I'll have to consult my Oscars guru to see whether there's any value around.

After the 13/8 about Clint last year, I was looking forward to your thoughts on this years

I doubt that we'll get another like that for a while! I think that we've won in each of the last five years though.

Can it really be four years since the 7/2 and 100/30 Talking Horses coup on Denzel Washington's best actor in a leading role (Training Day)?

Also nominated in 2002:
Russell Crowe (A Beautiful Mind)
Sean Penn (I Am Sam)
Will Smith (Ali)
Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom)

Well, after consultation it looks as if it's a struggle to find any value. With big odds-on favourites in all six main categories (and the bookmakers have it right, so perhaps some cumulative bets if that's your bag) the only recommended value bet - and not to major stakes - is George Clooney as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for "Syriana". What George has going against him - apart, of course, from Paul Giamatti for "Cinderella Man" - is that he has been nominated in the Best Director category too (for "Good Night And Good Luck") and these double nominations can go against you.

Best Film: "Brokeback Mountain" - Best Price 1/6 (Paddy Power)

Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman - Best Price 2/9 (Paddy Power) [Hills 1/10]

Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon - Best Price 2/7 (Paddy Power) [Hills 1/9]

Best Director: Ang Lee - Best Price 1/8 (Paddy Power) [Hills 1/20]

Best Supporting Actor: Paul Giamatti - Best Price 4/11 (Wiliam Hill)

Best Supporting Actor: Rachel Weisz - Best Price 2/5 (Wiliam Hill)

While a number of firms have put up prices, Hills are the only ones so far to offer odds on the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress markets

I really like David Strathairn - an actor who can change characters and tone with terrific credibility. What's GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK about, anyone? I haven't heard of it. I might be tempted outdoors into the Temple of Celluloid if it's any good, just to see DS at work.

Its about the stand taken against Joseph McCarthy and his communist witch hunts by CBS's Edward R Murrow and his team. Haven't seen it, but heard mostly good things about it. Shot in black and white, too. Clooney's directorial debut "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" was pretty good, so I expect its well worth seeing.

Huh! Lefty resistance to fascist oppression, more like it. And that sanctimonious Hoover bustard, probably sitting there smug in the knowledge he was wearing ladies' silk knickers, while he ruined lives.

I know Aunty K but I like to see such stuff coming out of the US - the land of the not so free - in fact that better describes us under Tony Police State Blair

Half a dozen reasons why the Oscars dont matter:

1997
Titanic over anything

1994
Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction

1980
Ordinary People over Goodfellas

1979
Kramer vs Kramer over Apocalypse Now

1976
Rocky over Network

1964
My Fair Lady over Dr Strangelove

Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas - that's like rating Sinndar above Montjeu - absurd

Curious coincidence, ain't it, Arders: Blair the Mad PM, and Blair the Mad Chief of the Met? I'm beginning to believe in The Blair Witch Project...

Martin Scorsese does not deserve it.
You're going to need to explain that, suny. I can think of two occasions when he should have won - the first was in 1981 when he was nominated for what I consider to be his best film to date (and surely the best film ever on a boxing theme) Raging Bull. The nominations were:

David Lynch for The Elephant Man
Roman Polanski for Tess
Robert Redford for Ordinary People
Richard Rush for The Stunt Man
Martin Scorsese for Raging Bull

The Academy gave the Oscar to first-time director Robert Redford (and, unbelievably the film Ordinary People, high class soap opera but soap opera all the same, beat Raging Bull for best film!) There is no doubt whatsoever that if these films and directors were lined up again today that Scorses would win by a distance.

Ten years later I contend that he should have won the award for Goodfellas. The nominations were:

Kevin Costner for Dances with Wolves
Francis Ford Coppola for The Godfather: Part III
Stephen Frears for The Grifters
Barbet Schroeder for Reversal of Fortune
Martin Scorsese for Goodfellas

How Coppola even got nominated for the appalling Godfather III I'll never know, and to me Scorsese should have won best director handas down. But, in their wisdom, the Academy gave it to Costner, who at the time was flavour of the month.

So I'm not sure how you can state with all your usual certainty that Scorsese has never deserved an Academy Award as best director?

Goodfellas didn't win Best Picture, that went to Dances With Wolves too. Joe Pesci's Best Supporting Actor award was the only one it managed.

Anyway, back to this year. The prices for the favourites in the "big six" categories have eased a little but are all still odds on - 2/7; 2/11; 1/4; 30/100; 4/6 and 4/9.

My one sporting bet, George Clooney to win the award for best supporting actor, has shortened. Oddschecker shows Hills at 4/1 - this is incorrect, they are now 5/2. Paddy Power is best for George at 3/1 and they are the only firm this big. (There is a small amount on Betfair at the same price.)
