Brokeback Mountain is a good thing. (Mind you, I'm not playing in any market other than best supporting actor)
Well i think Crash is going to win it. :shy: [/b][/quote]
:P Pity i never backed it. :(

It mystifies me how George could be nominated in Best Supporting Actor category - he's the main character!!!! Definitely worth seeing.

Both surprised and pleased that Brokeback Mountain did not win Best Film - how was it that The Times explained Last Of The Summer Wine to an American audience – something along the lines of a forerunner to Brokeback Mountain set in Yorkshire.

You saw a different film to me Steve ! I tend to agree with sunybay that it is a very good rather than a great film but it is very well acted and observed .

Political voting undoubtedly but that is hardly a surprise . I haven't seen Crash but I hope it is better than his last film the also Best Piicture winning Million Dollar Baby.

Why do you say it's political? I disagree. I didn't have a bet in the best film market but once Crash had won I spoke to someone and wish for Gearoid's sake that I had had the conversation earlier. Crash is very much an actors' film and the clue is that it won the Screen Actors' Guild award for best ensemble movie. The whole academy votes for best movie and the majority of the academy is made up of actors.

Also Crash was released much earlier in the year than the other nominated films and this was a worry for the studio as they felt that it would not be at the front of the mind of those who were voting. All the films are sent in DVD format to members of the academy and the studio timed their special DVD pack to arrive later than any of the others but just in time. Their intention was to reverse the problem and to makr Crash the last film that the members of the academy had seen. It seems to have worked.

Also, for what it's worth, I have seen all the contenders and I think that the best film won.

I'm no expert on films. I saw Crash when it came out and thought it was all a bit sentimental. Whats the name of the actor who played the cop? He stood out in the film for me.

Hardly his film - Paul Haggis wrote and directed Crash. He wrote the screenplay of Million Dollar Baby but that was very much Clint Eastwood's film.

One of the disappointments last night was that when given the chance to bestow the title of "Academy Award Winner" on many fine films, they chose to give 6 of them to King Kong and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Gearoid - Matt Dillon. I liked Crash a lot especially once it got past the first 10 minutes. The scene in the crashed car was a superb piece of cinematography.

In answer to Brian’s enquiry, Naomi Watts made a big impression on me in Mulholland Drive.

I am no longer quite robust enough to manage the impression Kong would make.

Too true!… He’s a big ape and not out of condition... (I'm talking about Kong now, not Brian).
