Pierse Hurdle

Got a feeling this year could be the year Victram actually goes close in the race he's been well punted twice for.

http://irishracingtrends.blogspot.com/

Came across this which is a fairly useful summary of the trends.

2 other trends...all previous winners in the last 10 years seem to have run at least once in a handicap.

and from the Irish Sports section of the betfair forum...the record of horses with penalties is as follows :-

Penalised runners:
2007 - Mister Hight (2nd), 3 more penalised runners unplaced
2006 - 1 penalised runner unplaced
2005 - 1 penalised runner fell
2004 - 2 penalised runners unplaced
2003 - 4 penalised runners unplaced
2002 - 2 penalised runners unplaced
2001 - 4 penalised runners were unplaced
2000 - 1 penalised runner pulled up
1999 - no penalised runners
1998 - no penalised runners

Do with this information as you will. Happy picking.

Following a course inspection at Leopardstown earlier today, parts of the course were found to be waterlogged, while the remainder has been described as Heavy ahead of the fixture there on Sunday.

The situation will be monitored on an ongoing basis over the next 48 hours, but there is no further inspection planned before Sunday morning.

It has been decided to divide the SM Morris Handicap Hurdle to form an eight race programme with the first contest timed for 12.20 pm.

In the event that the steeplechase course is found to be unfit for racing, it is planned to proceed with a five race programme.

That's narrowed it down to one less then Mel. :D

Anyone know which jockeys are booked for which Mullins horse?

Gordon Elliott believes Roman Villa will handle the testing conditions in the Pierse Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday.

The meeting needs to pass a 7.30am inspection on Sunday morning but Elliott insists his six-year-old has all the attributes to be competitive in one of the most hotly-contested handicaps of the season.

"If you look back through his form he has run well on heavy ground at Leopardstown before. As long as they can get through it and it is not tacky we will be OK," said the County Meath handler.

"All the horses are in the same boat and he is fit and well so he will definitely run.

"He has an entry in the totesport Trophy because you never know what will happen.

"But what we'll probably do is give him a little break and go back to Cheltenham for the County Hurdle.

"He might have improved a bit since then but this race should be run to suit - they'll go a fast gallop and he can come from off the pace.

"It's a competitive race but he goes there with a fighting chance and hopefully he'll be in the first three or four."

Henry de Bromhead is quickly making a name for himself and relies on The Spoonplayer.

The nine-year-old finished third behind Snowy Morning last time - a performance that now looks even better after Willie Mullins' charge subsequently won at Punchestown.

"If the meeting is on, the conditions should be fine for us," said De Bromhead.

"A strongly-run race over two miles in soft ground is ideal for him because it will bring his good hurdling in to play.

"My one worry would be that this race is usually won by an unexposed horse who goes on to better things.

"Our fellow is nine now and is just a handicapper, he holds no secrets from anybody.

"But the fact it is going to be testing ground will help us as it will slow some of the others down."

Tom Hogan anticipates a bold show from Silver Jaro after the youngster chased home John Kiely's well-fancied Indian Pace last month.

Hogan said: "He ran a smashing race last time and he's 8lb better off with the horse that beat him.

"Noel Fehily rides him. He came over and won a nice handicap on Sonnyanjoe for me at Punchestown and he's ridden a few other times before for me - he's a top-class rider."

Silver Jaro will carry just 10st 3lb in the richly-endowed two-miler, with the Willie Mullins-trained Alexander Taipan shouldering top weight of 11st 10lb.

Hogan continued: "It's a smashing racing weight for him. He's just turned five now and seems to be improving all the time.

"It's a 29-runner handicap and a very tricky race. Lots of things can go wrong but he's a horse that jumps and travels really well.

"I've never worked him on heavy ground but I know he'd like it soft so we'd be hopeful."

What do people think of Brave Right?

A good judge I know reckons he is the bet of the weekend.
Brave Right and Salt Lake are interesting ones for me. Brave Right would seem to be well enough handicapped and has won on heavy.

I understand that The Spoonplayer isn't a definite runner.I think ground conditions will dictate where this race goes -I will put up Dont Be Bitin and Boulavogue as each way bets.

Cant see Victram getting beat personally, think he's nailed on this year.
I couldn't have Victram with anyone else's money. He's got to be too exposed to have the remotest chance even if this sharp track will suit him better.

6lb better off on his Ladbroke Run where he was flashing into 4th but for flatenning the last;

Back off his proper mark and gets the heavy ground he relishes.

Last twice in this race he has had the misfortune of dreadful rides and Ado's horses are in great form at present. Beau Michael a real Triumph Hurdle contender. Victram is off a mark that suits him and has everything going for him, he has run better than it appears the last twice and he was unfortunate to make a mistake when staying on last time, also there aint no Jack The Giant amongst this lot and for me the Elliott horse hasn't looked too keen to go by on either of its last two runs, both times at Cheltenham came there running away only to throw in the towel, another 2nd awaits, this time to Victram :)

Respect for putting your neck on the block, Chris, and I hope he runs a big race for you.

Here's why I don't think he has any chance...

Firstly, in the Ladbroke, he wasn't "flashing" home. He was staying on at the same pace as the one I'd backed (Premier Dane) and neither the form book nor the race comments make any reference to a mistake at the last. He may well have flattened it but I doubt it cost him any ground or significant momentum.

Secondly, his Irish OR is 126 compared with his UK OR of 132. His top rating on my figures is 135, in a couple of races last season, notably in the TGT although the jockey was criticised for not getting him going soon enough then. So, he could arguably be 9lbs 'well in'.

Compare that with last year's Pearse:

Spring The Que won off 116 and didn't run again.
Mister Hight was second off 130 and subsequently ran to 150.
New Field was third off 113 and subsequently ran to 129 yet was still beaten an easy 3 lengths by Emmpat.
Maralan was fourth off 110 and was subsequently off a UK OR of 130 in the Fred Winter.

In the 2006 Pearse:
Studmaster won off 114 and was then off UK 143 in the County Hurdle although he had also hacked up of IOR 124 in between.

In 2005:
1. Essex (IOR 123, next time easy winner of the TGT off UK 144)
2. Mansony (IOR 114)
3. Al Eile (IOR 125)

Need I go on?

Victram, even off 6lbs lower in Ireland than in the UK, is likely to find a few several pounds better handicapped than him, regardless of how well the course and/or conditions will suit.

Whatever wins tomorrow will almost certainly prove to be thrown in. For all that Roman Villa is well in, I can't help thinking another three or four have been well hidden with this as a springboard to much better things. I don't have the time to study all the Irish form and even then it might not even help me find the winner so, as I said, I'll use the race to find future winners and trust that ALT Moore thinks Lenrey is good enough.

Great stuff DO.

I am sweet on Barker and Roman Villa but to be honest he is raining that bad now there must be every chance it will be off.

Jayo isnt totally out of this is he, the ground has come right for him, 30s on betfair looks over priced.
