I was never a fan of LR so seldom watched the original RP.
I watched some of the show the other night and thought it was OK, possibly because I hadn't seen much of the original. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Martin Clunes but I thought he carried it off just fine. On the other hand, I've always fancied the pants off Fay Ripley...
I wasn't in the UK for the original, but from a few re-runs' clips it looked awfully hammy. But this isn't really a re-make, is it? I know it's the same life scenarios, but it's more of 'based on' than an attempt to re-do the original scene by scene. I liked Clunes with Neil Morrissey in 'Men Behaving Badly' (which I thought was a riot), so quite happy to see him in this. Hey, a laff's a laff, for aw' that!
I was pleasantly surprised given the awful reviews. I liked the nod to the original with him walking past "Sunshine Desserts" on his way to GroomTech.
It would have been unwise to completely copy the original - it needed a little updating. The "CJ" character is too young while the female interest reminds me of the Pandora character in "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole".
Otherwise, a fair start with pumice replacing lychee ripple..
