That coupled with the "we just want our hamster back" - just goes to show how good they are togehter.

All the vibes fromm the 1 o'clock news are good - so hopefully he'll make a good recovery. I think theyve moved on to "optimistic" now... :D

Fantastic to hear that he's making progress.

James May has spoken to him and seems to think that he's doing well, they're a great team of presenters and it's great that they get on so well.

Fingers crossed for more progress!

Word is that the suited twats at the BBC may try and cull the programme after this incident.

If they do i`ll stop paying my license fee.

The incident does raise serious questions as to why presenters of such programmes are required to put themselves in danger , albeit probably willingly. In the search for ratings it seems that risks are taken. Rather than leaving such stunts to professionals.

For example we don't require Matt Chapman to ride Florimund the Stoute nutter - then again ......

I think Hammond is much the most likeable of the Top Gear team and I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

To be quite honest James - I'd say that these guys want to take the risks and wouldn't want stunt men to take their place. It's all about a need for speed and all that - the buzz they get must be incredible and I'd kill to do their job.

I do Colin - but that job would come a close second!

It was very good to hear on the radio this morning that Richard has been up and about now.

Me too. It's been one of their best shows for years. If Jezza, James and Hamster have anything to do with the decision, it'll stay.

Its the second highest rating show o BBC2 i think - theyd have one heck of a fight on their hands if they tried to stop it.

Its grand news that he walked a bit this moning - hopefully hell keep it up :)

Good grief - from 'significant brain injury' to talking and walking in a couple of days? :brows: My idea of a significant brain injury doesn't fit with his doctors', obviously.

Thats a little along the lines of what I thought too Kri - he was aided apparently, but as long as he is improving all the time, I dont mind what the doctors say!!!!

It'll be fantastic if he gets back to Top Gear and his cheerful perkiness. I liked TG up to a point, then got fed up with Clarkson grandstanding all the time. Since bringing in much more of the other two lads, especially Richard, it's improved out of all recognition.

I love Top Gear - it's great. Clarkson is superb as well - very, very funny. The addition of Hammond and May has been a very good one but even "grandstanding" it Clarkson was still brilliant. His books are superb as well - I was literally laughing out loud every few paragraphs when reading them.

I love it as well - I only started watching it aidly three years or so ago - theyve made it much more watchable ( not least by having Richard to look at!!) and Top Gear Dog is fab. (loved it - "shes not much use, shes in Park most of the time")

May it come back soon, with all 3 of them if at all possible.

They definitely need the three personalities together . Don't know if anyone ever saw the show where Clarkson had hurt his back and couldn't stop Hammond from taking all this choice of cars off the cool wall because he couldn't reach :D I really hope the doctors have got it wrong because it does sound as if he's doing amazingly well

I understand that the concerns for Hammond involve his short and long term memory functions from a report I read yesterday.

That sounds more like a concussion problem, because memory gets dumped as the brain works on healing. How short is a short-term memory? Five minutes or five days? How long is long term? Memory is interesting stuff - I worked for Headway, the charity supporting head-injured adults and their families (which is why I'm surprised that RH is making such quick progress) and most 'significant' head injuries caused strokes, which were the reason for so many of the attendees' problems. They also caused changes in habits and personality - a bus driver who'd been attacked with an iron bar by drunken youths became aggressive to the point he was in almost a constant rage. The effect on his wife and teenage family was appalling. He'd been a kind, jokey and sociable man up until then, and everything that she'd loved when she married him was gone.

A classic example is the Victoria Cross awarded soldier, Private Debarry, who I was reading about this morning in y'day's Torygraph. He readily acknowledges the shrapnel injuries he received to his head have dramatically altered his personality as Jon describes above.

Difficult for all concerned.

It would be amazing if there are no long term effects at all, and the brain injury may have taken a while to fully diagnose until the brain swelling had stopped and they were able to speak to Richard and test where and if any permanent damage has occurred. Perhaps, like concussion, longer term problems may arise at a later date, but I for one, am absolutely thrilled that The Hamster is making such great progress now. Whether he ever reappears on Top Gear again is not important to me, hearing he is alive and well, out of IC and walking about, definitely is.

If he comes back to the show what is the betting that the first car he takes round the track Clarkson will comment "at least you stayed on the track this time!!!"
