Richard Hammond Critically Ill

As a result of a riding accident many years ago, I had short term memory loss for several months - couldn't remember what I'd eaten from one meal to the next, had to write down phone conversations with clients at work, because I couldnt' remember anything I'd said/was told. I suppose I was at least 6 months before I was anywhere near 'normal, added to that, my reading was affected for several years - it's only recently, over 10 years later, that I've been able to read at anything like my normal pre accident speed - I had to read each word individiually, make sure it made sense in the context of the sentance, before moving on to the next - go too fast, and a word totally out of context would sneak in, and I'd have to re read the line several times......

Unless you've suffered that sort of injury, you don't realise how important memory is........

Top Gear has been in touch with PH today to thank everyone for their support and to congratulate our readers on creating such a phenomenom.

The news is good in that Richard continues to become more lucid by the day and is cracking more jokes and is in good humour.

The TG team was also keen to stress that, despite the panic, they are confident that they have the full backing of the BBC and that there are no plans to scrap the show.

nicked this from Piston Heads website..... apparently Hammy has said he will go on TV to save Top Gear if he needs to.

Near enough - just shown him, on the BBC News, being transported via the 'copter which brought him to hospital, to a hospital nearer his home. The neurosurgeon opined he'd still need plenty of time to rest while his brain healed, in spite of RH laughing and joking openly with staff. So, not back to work quite yet, but things are looking amazingly good after just eight days since the crash.

Hmmmm...

The Hamster lined up for Countdown
Top Gear crash victim Richard Hammond is being lined up as the next presenter of the vintage teatime word quiz Countdown. The star, currently recovering from a 300mph crash, could take over from Des Lynham after Des announced he’d like to quit at the end of the year.

The show would see a change of pace for Richard – known as “the Hamster” – from his life in the fast lane as presenter of the boys’ toys car show. Des has said he is leaving Countdown after 18 months because of the gruelling trek from his home in Sussex to Leeds where the show is filmed.

Richard is making a good recovery from a horrific crash behind the wheel of a jet-powered dragster at the Elvington airfield last month. But he’s not the only big name that Countdown producers are considering to join maths boffin Carol Vorderman on Channel 4’s longest-running show.

Also in the frame are Sky Sunrise presenter Eamonn Holmes and Deal Or No Deal star Noel Edmonds. But it’s the Hamster which tops the show’s shortlist. A source told the Daily Star Sunday: “If he keeps up his recovery, Richard would be the ideal choice to replace Des. But he will face tough competition from Eamonn and Noel.”

36-year-old Richard would be the youngest presenter of the show which was fronted for years by TV legend Richard Whiteley. The biggest stumbling block in his way might be the amount of mickey-taking he’ll get from Top Gear co-host and pal Jeremy Clarkson if he moves from fast cars to the rather more sedate surroundings of Countdown. The show is popular with the over-60s purple-rinse brigade, most of whom Clarkson would like to see banned from the road for driving too slow!

So do I to be honest - Ive alays thought it the show for old blokes that noone wants to watch. Praps they are hoping for a younger audience....

B) I know which hospital hes in now - just trying to come up with a reason to go there ( without being in need of treatment....)

Can't see any of that trio getting Countdown job.

Holmes - too vain & looks like he's aiming for the US
Edmonds - show is wrong for him - whereas DorND is perfect
Hammond - I would have thought that its far too sedate a show for him personality wise and in addition, I can see regardless of progress he is making, any head injury will take quite a long time to get back to normal. I have had 2 good friends suffer from a motor bike accident and a kick in the head from a racehorse and both took over a year to get back to anything like normal. Both were affected massively by severe mood swings which I believe is quite common.

My idea of Countdown host would be someone like Michael Aspel - safe & steady who will appeal to the blue rinse brigade.

I know it's a teatime show and therefore likely to be seen largely by 'at homes', but it's surprising how many young people - especially male - enter as contestants. True, they're a bit geeky and usually wearing green knitted jersey Chums shirts, but the appeal at competition level seems anything but blue rinse. If I hadn't subscribed to RUK as well as getting ATR, I'd still be noodling away in the afternoons, searching for a nine-letter word out of GUTIVESFI.

I think Countdown would be helped along by Graham Norton or Julian Clary - older ladies love squealing camp men. (Or so I hear.)
