Road to the Stayers Hurdle

In the Thyme Hill camp then Euro! He’s going to need to be sent for home early as PP we know will come like a train late so he can’t leave it too long

Not entirely sure I agree. The more of a test it is the more it'll suit Paisley Park.

The best way to get him beat is to turn it into somewhat of a sprint. But easier said than done as there are some dour stayers in there, not least the reigning champ

LO is definitely a dour stayer but he got away with it in a duff renewal (as well as PP's excusable disappointment) and I can't see it happening again. He is a 158-160 horse at best and should be nowhere near the business end of a proper Stayers' Hurdle.

I'm not suggesting he will be DO, though I did have a small e/w interest when he was 50s (posted on here) as that price was just plain wrong.

My point is/was, it won't turn into a speed test - and rarely does. Strong stamina will win this year's renewal.

Last year's race was dogpoo. The likes of Tobefair were way to close up.

To be fair to Tobefair :D he was rated mid 150's going into the race and had very solid festival form in finishing a neck second to Sire Du Berlais in the Pertemps the previous year. And in reality he actually finished last of those that rode a full race or didn't have a heart issue so he wasn't really that close at all.

For all of the above I do agree with you that it was a substandard renewal and the winner was very fortunate. 50/1 a few months back was silly though and I was glad to back it at that price as well.

This is my take. I really fancy Thyme Hill to win this, better ground will be a plus also

Paul’s Saga runs at Auteuil tomorrow, and reportedly swerves Cheltenham (though I’ve not seen it confirmed anywhere myself yet).

Re Paul's Saga, it's just occurred to me, wasn't there a comment around the time of the Warwick race that she might need another run before Cheltenham because she takes a lot of getting fit?

That said, I wouldn't have thought a trek to France would be ideal this close.

Still, no doubt confirmation one way or another will happen some time today.

Paul’s Saga is trained in France obviously, so I don’t think ‘trek’ concerns apply, DO! :p

Today’s race is a Grade 3 less than a fortnight before the Stayers. It’s not entirely impossible that they will travel her for it, but I’d have to think it unlikely. I still haven’t seen any confirmation one way or the other from the yard, but an exchange price of 100 might tell its own story.

Paul's Saga came over here some time before the Warwick race to prepare long-term for the Stayers' Hurdle. Jason Kielty supervised her training at an English yard and I'd presumed she was still based there until after the festival.

It's possible they abandoned the Stayers' idea after Warwick (even though Ruby thought it was a very promising, eye-catching run) and she went home unannounced to the racing public.

Paul's Saga finished second today.

Sounds like another promising run, losing ground in the back straight before finishing well, over just 2m2f.

Paddy Power are voiding ante-post bets on Thyme Hill

Unfortunately Paddy Power limit me to less than £10 so I'll get no relief from that quarter.
Thyme Hill is one of the cornerstone bets in my AP Book (best price 11/1) which I built up early for this year. I had some chunky wins at the end of the Flat and in the light of recent withdrawals I made a huge mistake in raising my AP stakes. Lost the biggest one earlier this month and absolutely gutted today, a kind of numbing electric shock to the system. Poor performances by my remaining significant bets, Minella Indo and Abacadabras, do not inspire great confidence and this may be my worst ever Cheltenham from an AP betting angle. A period of self flagellation is approaching.

Did you have any protection? I had Thyme Hill backed at 10s and also in a double with Chacun PS at 9/2 and 5/1 so I'm hurting but I have Fury Road at 20s and SDB in a bunch of multis.
