Rolling Stones at Glastonbury

I remember someone years ago telling me he judged people on what music they liked and he was a tosser too

Of course his world began and ended with inde bands and naturally he would look down on someone like me who loves 70s soul ( he said all black music is crap)

But then again as much as I love soul he wouldn't having a fcking clue who Gershwin, miles Davis or Schumann was. That I did know

Point is music is for different times. I wouldn't want Coltrane first thing in morning or Mendelssohn at a club. Would be ridiculous. Just as would trying to shag to George formby or playing chic s good times at a funeral

I'd fcking play it at your funeral and the whole congregation would sing along with the vicar leading the way

Reckon The Laughing Policeman would be a good soundtrack to your autopsy too

The thought of Saville doing what he did with My Little stick of Blackpool rock playing in background has just ruined my day

This thread sums up what's great about the forum.

On the music front I'm with EC. Nowt wrong with the stones and they put on a decent show, but there have been loads of better bands. Free, for example.

As far as Jagger being the best frontman ever I don't agree - there is a ten length winner in that category and he died in 1991.

i'll concede that one Benny:cool:..Freddie was a one off.. Jagger is too..Jagger is a great mover...Freddie the better singer by some way

I saw Free in 1972 at Sheffield City Hall...a great band...Free Live one of the great live albums

this brings back memories Benny

hard to say the best..most iconic for me are Jagger - Freddie - Plant. Plant has had more copiers than any other vocalist imo...the 70's are full of Plant soundalikes....he defined the whole image of Rock Singer imo

I'd put Steve Marriott in front of all of them just for for vocals though..and i'm a major Zep fan...he was a pretty charismatic performer too...Jagger wouldn't have him in the band when Taylor left..afraid he was going to steal his thunder..it took two people to replace him in the Faces...Wood and Rod:)

Not a rock fan of course but cant abide queen. Turgid silly and boring

I just dont see the stones as rock like the others mentioned. they are what they are but ypu would really be comparing jagger with james brown if anybody.

if there is one peformer for me who stands out in that genre it would be springsteen. hes a class act and has the range of styles, writing and charisma as well as still creating

If we are talking pure vocals then please.... none of these live with Marvin or Sam

But for a white singer who really stood out, Rods early stuff still grabs attention. Reason to believe is masterly.

I find Springsteen the epitome of turgid and boring, but it's all a matter I opinion I suppose. Rod Stewart is good, or was before he went into his wanky 'American Songbook' phase.

On the contrary, I like Springsteen and his early stuff is ace. Rod Stewart is one of the most horrendously overrated artists of all time however.

Off topic slightly, but I said Springsteen was shite a couple of years ago (to Clive and Bar The Bull precisely - I looked it up). I was talking utter ring; I saw him last year and was blown away. I'm probably not old enough to appreciate his earliest stuff (and he seems to have gotten progressively angrier as he has gotten older..) but I was definitely wrong about Springsteen; he is fantastic.

I still rate Bono though.

Jim Morrison was the greatest front-man of any band - ever - and had the good taste to live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse. You would never have caught him preening about like an utter, past-it, arsehole in his 70's.

As for Jagger's 'moves' - take a look at his outing with Bowie in the 'Dancing In The Streets' video, and try not to **** yourself laughing.....and that was 20-odd years ago. Typical that it was those vapid twats Maroon 5 that bigged him up.

You only like him because he got his knob out on stage

That's true about that terrible video with Bowie. What was he thinking of? Bowie for all his creativity must have one of the worst voices going too. Hate that song too

Euro. Springsteens latter albums just as good for me. The other half loves him and ghost of Tom Joad is a fine album

You can't beat this for a front man and great voice though

Can't believe any real music fan would slag the Stones who still rock.

They've forgotten more about performing live than most will ever learn or would even hope to

Go read the comments on Youtube...nothing but praise.

tbh I was never a great fan way back then was more of a Beatles and Hollies fan but 20 years after the fact the Stones were without doubt the greatest band in the world and to this day still pack every venue they play. Just how many bands can you say that about?

Mick is 70 years old this month and he's blowing the minds of young kids in their 20's who looked like they were having a ball http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuMInSLZiHg

So Woop Woo to any fooker out there who has the balls to slag them who incidentally should read up on acoustic engineering before dissing any open air concert performance
