Royal Ascot

Kingman.

I was not a believer but my slice of humble pie was heartily eaten on tuesday. He is a proper horse and I'm not sure what will trouble him over a mile as I can't see them stepping him up in trip. The only scenario I can see him beaten in over a mile (and its still unlikely) is with a strongly run race on deep ground at a stiff track. QEII most likely day for that to happen.

The highlight of the week was definitely [for me] Kingman, followed by Eagle Top then maybe the finish to the Gold Cup.

Forget all this strongly run race thing to get him beat. He thrives on it. Any sort of mile is within him. He was just ridden quite badly at Newmarket and even then wasn't far off. I wouldn't expect to see him beaten at a mile and don't expect him to step up to 10 either.

Kingman and Leading Light were my highlights (in the two races that are invariably my highlights). At the odds The Fugue was very satisfying also.

Highlight of the week for me had to be The Wow Signal with good reason.

From purely a horse racing fan view it may have lacked the Frankel style superstar but overall it's been one of the best Royal Ascots I can remember

Kingman I thought was awesome despite having opposed him

Telescope and The Fugue at long last proved they are as good as their trainers believed them to be.

The Gold Cup was the best race of the meeting and one to savour.

Hearing Willie Mullins talk about his in the last and jumping on at the last minute was a great finale to the meeting from a betting pint of view.

For the star of the show I'd have to go with the surprising Eagle Top who looks an awesome prospect and could prove to be the best middle distance horse in training by the end of the season.

Eagle Top has no doubt run to a decent mark. I just wonder if he is as good as he looked and whether this year’s King Ed was any sort of field (unusually no Derby runners turned up). Is he as good as Gosden’s Derby colt Romsdal, for example? Having said that Gosden seems to have targeted Eagle Top for a backend campaign and it’s not out of the question that he could be on the radar for the Arc. Overall he looks a bit awkward to me. I'd expect Romsdal to show up well in the St Leger. Beyond that both would have to improve again.
