Should the Bonus King abdicate?

Talk about a clique........the fact the guy called me a C**T is acceptable as long as its one of your buddies eh?

Slimchance isn't one of my buddies and you are a c**t.

Suggesting that it is ok to offend people as long as they are newbies while at the same time decrying the manners of others is hypocritical at best and downright offensive at worst.

I always like to think that a debate on a forum should be carried out as if the other person was in front of you - some of the stuff you've said to me in the past and many, many others would have resulted in you having your teeth rearranged if you'd been in front of me. Perhaps you should reconsider the way in which you interact with people.

PS - just in case there's any debate - I'd be quite happy to call you a **** to your face.

Yes, there's been some feisty discussions on here over the last few days.

Good entertainment value.

And it's nice to see some 'old' faces back, if only temporarily.

I just took an example day of my spreadsheet at random and the smallest bet I had was 44.44p and the largest was 307.69 and never once was I not matched. The chances of a bookie taking bets and giving you prices race after race are about ziltch

50 pounds is bog all on Betfair. Most Saturdays each race will trade up to and over 1 million pound and getting 2 or 3 grand on is a doddle never mind alousy 50 quid.

How far near the off of the race are you playing?

It always amazes me the amount of people that say they win on Betfair. Less than 10% of it's clients actually win yet everyone seems to say they win.

I am a reasonably successful punter but I do my bollocks on Betfair. It cannot be beaten if you're playing in size as you have to play near the off to get matched and the market is nearly always right by then. Not to mention then paying comm on winnings.

I don’t even try to win on Betfair. I use it as a sort of slush fund to cover any holes in my ante-post book. The horses I back on it are invariably the ones I don’t want to win, but nevertheless back to protect overall downside.

I've started limiting losses on there and only playing antepost or very early when you can nick a few £10s and £20s on something you think is overpriced but you won't get rich playing regularly on racing on there.

This is exactly what I do. I don't see how you can sensibly use it any other way. It suits me as I'm covering stakes and it suits Betfair as I'm usually giving them money I don't want to see back.

surely its not who you bet with..but how good you are at the game?

lets say the average punter loses 10% over a period of time..surely the better punter will win overall

depends what level "average" is i suppose

It's who you bet with in so much as type and size of bet and when and how much you can get on at a given odd. It's about securing value in a ante-post portfolio for me and then hitting remaining value on course.

Fair play for an honest assessment of the beast that is Betfair. The only way to win on there is with insider information. It's a fascinating subject and worthy of a thread of its own. I don't know where the withdraw button is on Betfair. I have a bit of success using a friends account because I use him like a bookmaker i.e bet - win - withdraw.

I'd argue that point but then I only bet £2 min to £20 max but I've withdrawn over £600 this year unfortunately I can only get P/L for last 3 months.

Darts: £14.43 | Football: -£0.72 | Golf: -£34.66 | Horse Racing: £153.58 | Special Bets: £9.12 | Tennis: -£6.59 Total P&L: £135.16

I need to give up the golf betting but can't resist the huge odds. :D

Are we talking winning big here, like to almost a pro level or just show a profit?

My net deposit figure at the moment is £600 and I have £1100 available to bet with. I've already taken a cheque from them in the past and a couple of years ago I went on a mad spree of playing deal or no deal when I blew £600 in two sittings. I was being boringly disciplined and risk averse to a certain extent on the horses and needed a blow out. I emailed them and they agreed to bar me from all Games on the site.

I agree with EC, it's not who you bet with it's how you bet.

It's both... the types of bet you make are largely determined by who you bet with. Hence on-course betting is totally different from using a spread betting facility, for example. Whatever your strategy for how to bet - trying to maximise upside or defend downside - will (or should) determine who you bet with, as the appropriate bet will not always be possible through just one provider.

I barred myself from Betfair games 7-8 years ago. I was playing the game where you bet on poker hands. As for your first question I don't consider myself a big punter but I'll turnover €250k this year. Luke turnovers that on Dundalk and Wolverhampton on a Friday night :D

Seems to me that you're both saying similar things and I agree with both sentiments; your betting approach will ultimately determine the appropriate way to bet and who you bet with.

Losing on betfair isn't a big issue for me, as long as the bulk of the losses are related to laybacks of bets struck with the bookie.

In my case, the more I arb the more I want to lose on the betfair account.

That's what I tell the wife anyway

Very decent levels of honesty there Nick. I think the issue with Betfair is that it makes you bet differently. If you're a regular semi-pro say more than casual punter, the market on Betfair makes it very hard to win as the liquidity is only there when the market is right.

Granted, you get the odd anomaly like when Cirrus went off 15s for the Champion Stakes and Siyouma went off 18s for the Sun Chariot and when So You Think got sent off odds on for the Dubai World Cup but they are occasional and it'd be very hard and take impossible levels of discipline and insight to only play those ones.
