I'm sure everyone who's benefitted from AP's wins won't agree, but none of it's been done 'for sport', Gearoid. It's been done for a riding fee and a percentage of prize money won, it's been done to make a personal record and to break a personal hoodoo (the GN). All fabulous stuff, but I don't see what's 'sporting' when professional jockeys, professional golfers, professional this or that line up against people representing their country.
But each to their own. It's not an event I feel is particularly relevant, when the protagonists usually receive enough awards and rewards within their own sphere. It's rather like lining up 10 favourite foods and declaring one is the best, when all are excellent in their own right. Is a sherry trifle 'better' than a rump steak? Personally, I'd like one after the other, I like 'em both, but the SPOTY competition chucks in kids with oldsters, pros with non-pros, not-for-profit sporting prowess with some done very much for not just profit but fees. It's a dog's breakfast and, imvvho, of no particular importance.
Even a 'Lifetime Achievement Award', ffs! What's that about? If I've won a particular event or series of events when I'm a pro, why do I need another award to say I've done so? I can understand 'Salesman of the Year' because that's based on a quantifiable result. I can't see how Beckham's 'lifetime achievement' is 'better' than, say, McCoy's - other than Becks's 'ambassadorial' work outside the UK with young kids. Then why not 'Best Ambassador for Sport'? Sorry, my mind's hurting - I must go and rest.
