Can't believe how many shoes they seem to lose; must be flying about all over the place!

Out of interest, do they try and find the shoe? Can t imagine it being comfortable running on a loose shoe with a nail hanging out.

The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Handicapper offered observations and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities. The rider stated that his instructions were to drop DREAM BERRY (FR) out and to get the gelding to settle and ask for an effort approaching the final hurdle. The rider added that he had been denied a clear run down the back straight and suffered slight interference leaving the back straight, which resulted in him being further back than ideal. Statement from BHA

Following the conclusion of the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, Jamie Stier, Chief Regulatory Officer for the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), said:
“I must first express my sympathy towards to all those who will have loved and cared for the horses who suffered fatal injuries this week. Everyone who follows this sport does so because we love these fine animals and it is extremely sad when we lose any horse.
“The BHA will be reviewing the circumstances leading to the fatalities at the Cheltenham Festival. We will examine the evidence from the past week over the next few days before deciding how we will pursue the review.
“We continue to use research, safety measures, regulation and education to reduce fatality rates to as close to zero as possible. This is what has contributed to the overall fatality rate within British racing reducing by a third in the last 20 years, and the fatality rate in Jump racing reducing to below 0.4% of runners.
“We will also be examining whether the existing penalties for misuse of the whip, and how they apply, constitute an adequate deterrent to jockeys.”

The ones that died weren't whipped to death, though.

They are separate issues.

I've been arguing since the three way photo in the International Stakes at York in 1998 that excessive use of the whip should mean disqualification.

The deaths are a mixture of bad luck, running on unsuitable ground (asking them to do too much in conditions they struggle to cope with) and maybe over-training.

I wonder if there is a case for abandoning/postponing racing more readily.

Jessie Harrington used the word 'appalling' more than once before the last race yesterday, referring to the ground.

The thing that annoys me most is when the jock makes no attempt to grab their horse when coming down when they are in a position to do so. Just letting them run/hobble off is a no no in my book.

Thought this was interesting from yesterday's report.

Race 5 - 4:10pm
THE ST. JAMES'S PLACE FOXHUNTER CHALLENGE CUP OPEN HUNTERS' STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 2)

The Veterinary Officer reported that a kit bag search of Alan Fleming, the trainer of FOXROCK (IRE), revealed possession of Pro-Dosa Boost Oral Paste, an electrolyte trace element replacer. The trainer, the Equine Welfare and Integrity Officer and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed. The explanation of the trainer that it was unopened and had not been used was noted. Being satisfied that the gelding had received only normal food and water by mouth on the day of racing, the Stewards allowed FOXROCK (IRE) to run and the gelding was routine tested. They further confiscated the substance, ordered that it be tested, and referred the matter to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority.

I actually feel that electrolytes should be allowed as quite often horses won't drink after a race but if you get these pastes in quickly then they will. And with a fair few suffering from mild heat exhaustion, then it's even more vital to get them rehydrated asap. These pastes can work within minutes - a few months ago my horse suffered a serious accident and one of the subsequent complications was severe dehydration which resulted in condition called The Thumps or hiccups which started to affect his heart. We tried to tube powered electrolytes into him but his thoat was swollen. I rang every local trainer (inc. Hobbs and Pipe) and no one had any. Fortunately Bob Buckler did and i went and picked them up. Cured him within half an hour!!

Bearing in mind you see plenty of sportsmen and women drinking specialist drinks during an event (I'm thinking tennis), it seems wrong that it is seen as a banned substance for horses.

Thank you very much for putting these up. The number of shoes lost borders on ridiculous!
The fact that an unopened package was found and not used, doesn't mean they had used one and thrown the empty packaging away!
I note no comments regarding the fatalities. Do the stewards not interview/take any action when these happen?
I think to stop whip abuse happening the penalties for the jockey have to be harsher. They are the only ones responsible, it's not fair to disqualify the horse and penalise the owners. Instead of 6 days, if the ban was 3 weeks( or more), maybe that might make them think twice, and instigated from the next day after the offence and not several days/weeks later?

Interesting thread.

Jinny - out of interest, what is the impact of electrolytes in terms of hydration - is it simply getting horses to take fluids in quicker? Back in the day (a long time ago!) when I was starting riding out they were a big deal (AP O'Brien at the time being famous for optimising their use in Ireland but it was fairly widely used) but I never understood the exact benefit. Would be really interested to know more..

Encourages fluid intake and helps restore blood volume by replacing the lost ions used to maintain it normally. Dehydrated horses go into toxic shock very easily.

Ridiculous it isn't allowed - why not make it available under vet supervision at the track if they want it regulated!?

Many a horse has been revived from exhaustion with a bottle of duphalyte IV
