The 2025 December Gold Cup Handicap Chase

Jagwar was just annoying. The jumping, positioning and then coming up the rail all added up to losing a race he should have been winning easily.

He's quite a leggy horse that I imagine takes a bit of balancing over a fence and to get that stride spot on. Wouldn't be every one's ride.

Even more annoying was Vincenzo not winning. I had it in a yankee with David's Well (6/4), Carlenrig (5/1) and Lanesborough (9/4). It would have been a reasonably tidy return.:poop:

All this criticism (not that I necessarily disagree with any of it) of Jagwar's pilot - you could be forgiven for thinking it was a late jockey change.

This "bang average" jockey was always going to be riding the beast - we bet with our eyes open.

Purely from a handicapping point of view, Il Ridoto and Martator stand out as the best on their best form but this race, for me, is seldom about the best in on past form. It's much more about what's best in on likely future form, which is why the second-season novices and Kim Roque (first season) appeal most to me.

They are, in racecard order:

Jagwar
Imperial Saint
Vincenzo
Hoe Joly Smoke
(& Kim Roque)

They could easily fill the first five places.

2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. And Il Ridoto and Martator were 7th and 9th.

Thank fvck I didn't back tricasts. I'd be out prowling the neighbourhood looking for cats to kick.
