One of the great things about racing and betting is there is always something new to you forward to.

This coming Saturday at Aintree it's the Grand Sefton, a race I first heard of in my youth when reading things like Dick Francis's autobiography.

Resurrected in 2003, I rather like it.

The five-day confirmations are tomorrow and I shall wait for those, as I enjoy backing non runners about as much as I'd enjoy ever again wearing a shirt I'd lent to Walsworth.

But if I knew he was going to run the horse I'd be interested in at 16/1 is Thistle Ask.

This beast fairly hosed up at Wetherby on Friday, he's fit and seemingly on the upgrade.

Admittedly, he jumped right on occasions at the "A1 Venue" and he's twice had wind surgery but he's on the upgrade.

Venetia Williams November Groupies might be interested in Frero Banbou.

More from me on this contest on Monday.

Tempted by Colonel Harry who off 144 is a well handicapped chaser. However he's also in the Haldon on Friday (don't understand this entry at all) and the Paddy Power in a fortnight so can't pull the trigger yet.

The 8yo Mount Tempest has no business being the complete rag at 66/1.

He's fit, hated the ground in a decent race he was sent off at 3/1 for last time out, and had previously won well at Worcester on a similar surface to what he'll get on Saturday.

I'll almost certainly watch this race but I'm wondering why White Rhino has been down as a non-runner in the RP cards since Thursday evening but was still showing at 5/1 fav on oddschecker late last night, still isn't listed as a non-runner on the RP non-runners page and is showing at 11/2 in the RP card betting forecast and 9/1 at oddschecker.

RP seemed to know on Thursday it was a non-runner yet that hasn't been confirmed anywhere. Betting on the race is going to incur a R4 if it doesn't run.

Edit - btw, Mahon's Glory, Johnnywho (if it's trying, dunno about that) and Our Power would be my three against the field in that order.

(I've also backed Our Power and Katate Dori (to do a Haiti Couleurs) in the Pertemps race in an ew double for the sake of a reason to watch, just in case the brilliant Sam Thomas and Dylan J are out to land the double.)

"Colonel Harry had an excellent novice chase season and made a good start to 2024/25 when 2nd on his debut. He proved not to stay the Coral Gold Cup (once Hennessy) trip and then tipped up at Cheltenham's New Year fixture. He's back off a break, and I think he should love these fences, so providing the ground is soft enough, he should run well. " Trainer

Jet Plane runs in the Grand Sefton, and he's obviously been around the national fences before, finishing second in the Foxhunter, which was obviously a great run in the spring. Another run like that will see him go very well. It's hard to say how the hunter chase form compares to something like this, but at least he has a liking for the fences. Trainer

"Mahons Glory is super-fit after a couple of recent runs and he has schooled very well and had plenty of practice over the Aintree-type obstacles. I hope he gets round and if he does he could be up there fighting for the prize." Trainer

Soft ground needed?

I think the trainer would prefer dig but he's by Shirocco who acted on decent ground as have most of his best jumpers (Annie Power, Minella Rocco, Le Milos for example)
It's just that his last four wins have come on Sft, Hvy, Sft, Hvy.

I was tempted but that put me off somewhat.
