The Pitmens Derby 2023 (A.K.A Northumberland Plate) :)

Yeah, Sir C certainly didn't disgrace himself.

Well done DO for naming both race winners (although I'm rueing a stupid last-second decision to leave Hacienda out of a trifecta with Faylaq and Sunny, which paid £600+).

Faylaq!! What can you say. Very possible he'd have done it with a clear run. But did us proud enough and vindicated the faith. Ironically, it's even possible he'd have taken the Plate where the faster pace there could have made that finishing run more potent.

Good news is, now we know Faylaq stays. Bad news (for some of us)...Goldie may well have him running till he's 11+ !!!!!! **but we may yet find a win**

I suspect that behind that sonsie old coupon of Goldie's is an extremely shrewd cookie.

Faylaq and Sir C got very similar rides and both were a bit unlucky - Sir C especially so - but that's how Goldie seems to send them out to run in these races and with some success. Not many trainers would ask a horse to run in the Cambridgeshire and next time up in the Cesarewitch but one of his did (Nanton? 2009?). I do think hold-up tactics are very hard to execute in the Cesarewitch because it's basically two straight nine furlong races and they don't slow down much at the turn.

But I always respect his runners, ever since the days when he regularly sent horses down to raid the big southern handicap chases early in his career.

Trouble with Goldie is that he plays his cards extremely close to his chest and I’ve never managed to get even a sneaky peek.

The third horse home that time at Newmarket, Saratoga Gold, was unlucky to unseat at York next time out, so could have won the race if that hadn't happend. Saratoga Gold was charging up riderless at the end. I couldn't help but feel he would have franked the Newmarket form even further.
I didn't look.at todays racing but just seen Saratoga Gold hacked up at Kempton tonight. I'm surprised at the price he went off actually - maybe because it was on the all weather?

Anyhow, there could be a big turf handicap in this horse before the end of this season I reckon. Watch out.

Saratoga Gold declared for the 4.05 at Ascot on Saturday. I reckon it'll take a really good one to stop him. Saratoga was also entered in the Ebor earlier this week I see. Whether he is good enough for the Ebor, which he is currently 25/1 for, we'll find out a bit more after this race on Saturday. You never know.
