BBC1 9PM tonight

DURATION: 1 HOUR

Over the course of one spring season, from the births of foals at Sandringham to the thrill of race day at Newbury, this film reveals HM the Queen's expertise and close personal involvement in producing top class racehorses, as well as her work to preserve the native pony breeds of Britain. Clare Balding, whose family have trained royal horses for three generations, presents this intimate profile of the Queen and her lifelong love of all things equine.

I recorded it (on Betamax) but I don't think it's something to which I'll be returning. I just thought it was a bit dull. It would be interesting to hear the Queen actually interviewed and talking about racing and breeding but for some reason that's clearly thought inappropriate. Clare Balding seems to be everywhere these days and is at serious risk of over-exposure.

I am disturbed by two things in this thread.

1) I do not wish to be presented with Clare Balding's over-exposure.

2) I think it is quite disgusting, although possibly a sign of the times, that the BBC of all people, should be broadcasting a documentary about alleged bestiality involving Her Majesty. I shall be writing a stiffly worded letter to Points Of View expressing my dis-satisfaction. If the Queen wants to nosh off horses, then surely that is her own affair.

As a programme about horses, for a public who would not normally watch such a programme, it was very good. The sequences showing the birth of a foal and Monty Roberts working with a difficult horses, for example, were interesting.

As a programme about The Queen, it was extremely reverential, to the point where comments made by her about a foal being "a bit wobbly" as it fell on its face were presented as being amazingly profound.

Was it just me that was reminded of David Attenborough and the gorillas when Clare was talking in hushed terms about the way the Queen handled the horses? And is that treason??
