Keith to stop training at month-end. His Mum was a prominent trainer when I first started following racing.

Really an oversight on my part not to have posted before, but congratulations are due to Mary's grandson James, for becoming champion jockey in France.

Where one door closes, another opens.

A friend of mine owns a horse with them that could be the one that sees him go out on a winner at the end of January. If they can get his feet right? The horse that is, not the friend. :)

Another big name gone from the training ranks in the north.

The vacuum left by Hojo's ban was never filled, NH racing has never been weaker there in my lifetime. The chances of a northern festival winner, even a festival runner, outside of the handicaps is zilch.

Is this a reflection of wider economic trends in the UK or is there a particular problem linked to racing?

Cab on Target was the one I got wrong.....I thought he was a Gold Cup horse but he never quite made it but a top class animal when things went right for him

I was always a fan of the Reveley's but who wasn't?

As far as James go I remember Rory Delargy crucifying the guy on TRF for weeks if not months and perhaps rightly so.

James went on to close all doubters mouth and became one of the best around...............gotta be in the blood??

Lucinda going backwards too...you'll struggle to fine top class horses stabled past Cheltenham now.

A trainer is only as good as the horses he gets, and it's not hard to see where the money is being spent. It's the same problem in Ireland. All the good horses are in about half a dozen yards.

Even a trainer like Howard Johnson could win a Grade 1 when he had Graham Wylie's check book to help him along. McCain has lost the patronage of the Rooney's, although he still has Tim Leslie.

Although it's not just trainers. Whoever gets first dibs from Harold Kirk, Bromley, Minton, et al usually get the best young horses, and none of those trainers are in the north.

The main thing I remember about Mary Reveley was that she was not keen on running her horses at Cheltenham.

I don't think she ever got the recognition she deserved as a dual purpose trainer. It's sad to see all the northern trainers falling by the wayside. At least Mr Hemmings supports some of them still.

Marello was one of my favourite horses. Was at Haydock when sluiced up again a 1/2 shot of Twiston Davies I think it was Catch The Ace or something. Anyway, was devastated when Marello was killed in an accident after being hit by a truck years later.

As mention in the article Mellottie was another favourite, ran is several Cambridgeshires' winning the race in 1991.

In my my early twenties I was working in a betting shop in London and I was given the responsibility of opening the shop on Grand National Day.Friday was my day off and I had my max of Cab on Target-this was followed by 12 hours of alcohol and an encounter with a divorced woman twice my age.On the morning of the big race I woke up at 930ish with no clothes ironed.Needless to say I got a frosty reception when I arrived.I was certain I would get the sack on Monday but that was the year the race was voided.I also had a few quid on Morley Street who won under an epic ride from Graham Bradley.

Saddles his last runner in 4.10 Southwell. Be lovely to see him go out on a winner.
