The Road To The Champion Hurdle 2021

I think you are pulling my leg mate. :)

Are you suggesting Goshen will be upped to 3 miles this season, or just willing that on to be case for whatever reason? :)

No, I'm not suggesting he will be upped to 3 miles, I'm surmising the connections are investigating possibilities.

He does have a tendency to veer violently out to the right too!

Not entirely convinced they are motivated that way, Paul.

She won the Irish Champion Hurdle last season, and it would have been an obvious route to have had a crack at the Cheltenham version in March, yet still they chose the Mares.

Hard to see her being turned-out for the G1 2m hurdle at the Lep if she runs in the Hattons Grace, though not impossible I suppose, but I’d expect her spring target to largely be dictated by how Abacadabras and Saint Roi perform over Xmas, and how she fares against them at the DRF - assuming she is asked to take them on.

I don't know. I'd say it was probably a very close decision which way to go last season. They admitted as much. Bear in mind Kenny Alexander hadn't had a Festival winner before which perhaps swung it. Now she's got the Mares Hurdle on her CV and he's got his Festival winner, I'd say the temptation will be even greater to go for the Champion Hurdle this season. She'd ahve to show she can on the track of course. I still don't think they should though for the reasons mentioned.

Faugheen, Annie Power Hardy Eustace and Yanworth all took in this race ofc the top of my head, nothing unusual about it at all, and all the more understanding considering he hasn't ran over anything further than 2m.

Faugheen, Annie Power, Hardy Eustace and Yanworth all posed question marks as to whether the connections aught to take in the stayers or the Champion hurdle.

I am going to suggest that Goshen's future will be headlined when he run's over further...

If he doesn't get 2m4 around Ascot he's not winning a champion hurdle!

I've no qualms about that. I think the distance is ideal, the course too. He also has a tendency to veer badly to the right; especially towards the end of his races; hence the right-handed track, which connections have kept to for 95% of his races.

I think he will give Call Me Lord the perfect toe into the race!

So they've either got a future champion hurdler on their hands or a mediocre cross country contender ;)

Friday 13th ….a day that Jamie Moore will never forget….

Something very interesting can be drawn from watching the County hurdle and the Triumph hurdle, side by side.

Picking up the race as the whole of the county field fan across the first hurdle simultaneously; All Mankind closely pursued by Goshen and the lit up Aspire Tower, do like-wise.

On they charge to the 2nd hurdle where the County field have opened up by 4 about lengths.

The 3rd hurdle and the County field have now pushed on and are approximately 8 lengths ahead; 75% of the strewn out field, jump it before All Mankind reaches it.

The 4th hurdle and the distance is about the same.

The 5th and the gap is reduced to 2 Length’s.

All mankind draws level with the County field at the 6th.

Goshen takes it up and pushes on, he takes the 7th about 3 Length’s to the good.

The jockey, terrified to turn around, drives his mount further into an unassailable lead. Jamie Moore allows his mount to tack over to the far rail. Big mistake, although I don’t think there was much he could do about it… The horse has a tendency to find his own stride when tiring, and travels right across the hurdle…Being right up against the rail, there was nowhere to go. The horse fails to lift his legs….He hits the deck with an 8 length lead over Burning victory.

Saint Roi, who for now had simply cruised through the field, Geraghty having the luxury to follow whoever he thought could take him the longest, takes up the lead at the last level with Burning Victory in the Triumph…

Geraghty opens up. Saint Roi’s long neck stretches forth, he powers to the line, reaching it an unbelievable 10 lengths ahead of Burning Victory.

I conclude, that the Triumph field was flagging. I have no qualm's about calling Goshen the winner...although there are many who say Burning Victory was closing him down.

Saint Roi would easily have covered Goshen's moves and cruised effortlessly passed him.

Saint Roi is the second coming, he's the next Hurricane!

My own sectional comparison, taken from the review thread on the festival races:

I've done a fairly rudimentary comparison between the Triumph and the County. I don't think Simon Rowlands published a furlong-by-furlong comparison, focusing instead on the finishing % relative to the whole race.

I have SR running the C&D 26lbs faster than BV.

Assuming Goshen would have won by 10L, SR would have been 9lbs or so faster.

They got to the first hurdle sooner in the County although that's based on the TV clock which might not have started at exactly the same time. Thereafter, I paused the recording as the lead horse was in flight, its withers directly above the hurdle. From there on, the Triumph was very fast-run and at the second-last was 8L in front (ie Goshen was). While Goshen was taking nearly ten lengths off his field from there to the last, the County field were going at pretty much the same speed and Saint Roi sped clear on the run-in.

I think Goshen would have been a very impressive winner but over a modest field while I think the County was a ridiculously hot race, some way better than even a normally hot remewal.

Time will tell, I suppose.

These are my sectional timings taken from the TV recording. Unfortunately, whichever dick in the production team was responsible for the pictures, he needs a toe up the arse because his fancy-dan idea of showing the jockey-cam image in the top left corner of the main screen meant the much-hyped on-screen clock was fuckin hidden!

Ah, maybe if I keep doing a single test page, the one I want may appear lower down as the page count changes...doubt it though because of the even number factor.

Yet Moore said he did some work yesterday and his ‘zest is back’

Not declared today.
