Auroras Encore has been hit with an 11lb rise in the weights for his John Smith's Grand National win. This means Sue Smith's 11-year-old goes into the Coral Scottish Grand National on Saturday week off a 5lb higher mark than when runner-up to Merigo in the race last year.

Weird Al heads the weights at 11st 12lb with both Cappa Bleu (11st 4lb) and Teaforthree (11st 10lb), second and third at Aintre, raised 2lb for their efforts.

That rise in the weights will scupper their chances, especially AA's. The other two still have place prospects but I'll be looking elsewhere for the winner.

Mind you, I'd have thought the Scottish National was an early closer.

I was hoping for something in the region of a 6lb rise for Auroras Encore so coupled with the defection of the top weight I can't see him being up to winning this with 11st 5 on his back.

I'll be looking elsewhere now too.

Despite his age and relative inexperience I would like to see Hadrian's Approach given a chance over the trip.

For the scottish national do we know if they horse will have to actually jump the fences, or can they just run right through them like at Aintree? :)

The Ayr National meeting often throws up some surprising form turnarounds.

Whether it's the often faster ground or the time of the season or whatever, I don't know, but you get some results that make last week's Aintree results almost predictable.

Caveat bettor.

Would imagine the National winner will run a big race having finished 2nd in the race before but hard to imagine him winning of his current mark.

I'd prefer either Godsmejudge or Our Mick and will probably back both if they turn up

Bet365, Boylesports, Betvictor and Paddy Power are paying out on 5 places in the Scottish National tomorrow

So who did we end up backing?

My main fancy is Problema Tic with some sickness insurance on Tour Des Champs and Relax. I've also nibbled at the long odds on Betfair and in the place market with rags Captain Americo and Pentiffic.

Grumeti in Scottish Champion Hurdle.

Our Mick and Bradley in Scottish Nash.

All hope and no expectation.

I've seen plenty of races before with just one horse at single figure odds, but that horse is usually a hotpot. I don't think I've ever seen one before with a 9/1 favourite. Even the second favourites are as high as 14/1.

I can see where you're coming from with Tour Des Champs and to a lesser extent Relax, but I can't see a chance for Problema Tic on this season's form. Is there a particular reason for thinking he might come back to form today?

My three will probably be Monsieur Cadou, Rigadin De Beauchamps and Tour Des Champs (all very French-sounding) but I will be betting minor amounts.

Neptune Equester, Lively Baron and Nuts'n'Bolts. Did back Rebeccas Choice before the ground started to dry out.

For the National I've gone for Bradley, Our Mick and Relax (50/!) all which were much better priced last evening.
