WILLIAM HILL TROPHY CHASE
Facts and Figures
1. The William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase was sponsored between 1981 and 1996 by the Ritz
Club. Astec Buzz Shop backed the race in 1997, with William Hill taking over in 1998.
2. Five horses have used the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase as a stepping stone to the
totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. These are:
Silver Fame (1950) Gold Cup 1951
Four Ten (1953) Gold Cup 1954
Limber Hill (1955) Gold Cup 1956
Kerstin (1956) Gold Cup 1958
Charter Party (1986) Gold Cup 1988
3. The shortest-priced winner was Silver Fame in 1950 at 5/4. The longest-priced scorer was
Joes Edge, who belied odds of 50/1 to win in 2007.
4. Only two horses have won the race twice - Sentina in 1957 and 1958, and Scot Lane in 1982
and 1983. Unguided Missile, successful in 1998, had been runner-up in 1996.

WILLIAM HILL TROPHY HANDICAP CHASE - Analysis
A high-class entry of 88 horses for the extended three-mile handicap includes eight from the
David Pipe stable that carried off the prize in 2008 with An Accordion.
Pipe’s octet includes the in-form veteran Our Vic, winner of the 2008 Ryanair Chase, as well
as the Grade Two Dipper Novices’ Chase victor Seven Is My Number, The Package and 2008
Grand National hero Comply Or Die.
The last horse to take this prize en route to Grand National success was Rough Quest in
1995, who took that Aintree prize in 1996, following on from Seagram who completed the double in
1991. Several Aintree contenders could take in the William Hill Trophy including last year’s Grand
National winner Mon Mome from the Venetia Williams yard, the Bob Buckler-trained Aon Chase
runner-up Niche Market, last season’s Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase hero Character Building,
trained by John Quinn, the Tom Mullins-trained Chelsea Harbour, and Palypso De Creek from the
Charlie Longsdon stable.
Jonjo O’Neill saddled Wichita Lineman to win the William Hill Trophy in 2009 and the
Jackdaws Castle handler has three entries, the promising novice Theatrical Moment, last season’s
Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase runner-up Isn’t That Lucky and Synchronised.
New Alco was runner-up in this race for Ferdy Murphy in 2008. The trainer, successful with
Joes Edge in 2007, has also entered Galant Nuit, victorious in the Grade Three Servo Trophy
Handicap at The Open in November.
The Paul Nicholls-trained The Tother One is one of three Ditcheat entries, alongside Tatenen
and Kicks For Free.
Calgary Bay, successful in the 2009 Dipper Novices’ Chase and victorious in a three-mile
handicap at Doncaster in January, could represent trainer Henrietta Knight, while Evan Williams has
engaged last season’s Christie’s Foxhunter Chase winner Cappa Bleu.
Donald McCain has entered smart novice Khachaturian, 2007 Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir winner
Cloudy Lane and Will Be Done.
The 13-year-old Monkerhostin won the 2004 Coral Cup and was fourth in the 2007 totesport
Cheltenham Gold Cup at The Festival. He landed a Sandown handicap from Exmoor Ranger on
February 6 and is one of four Philip Hobbs-trained entries alongside Kornati Kid, Boychuk and
Lacdoudal.
Alan King has engaged smart novice Bensalem, as well as last season’s third Nenuphar
Collonges, Franchoek and Merigo.
Ogee, third to Long Run in the Grade One Feltham Novices’ Chase in December and himself
a Grade One-winning novice over hurdles, has been engaged by Renee Robeson. Others of note
include Bible Lord, Joe Lively, Air Force One, Coe and 2009 Scottish Grand National winner Hello
Bud.
Irish handler Noel Meade has engaged last season’s Grade One Powers Gold Cup hero Aran
Concerto and fellow Grade One winner Casey Jones, who saw off Kilcrea Castle, now trained by
Emma Lavelle, to win the Grade Three Star Chase at Punchestown in October.
The 12 Irish-trained entries also include the Willie Mullins-trained pair, Jayo and Pomme
Tiepy, the Tom Taaffe-trained 2008 Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase winner Finger Onthe Pulse
and the Dessie Hughes-trained Siegemaster.

Weights for the 11 handicaps at The Festival will be revealed at "The Countdown", staged at Cheltenham Racecourse on Wednesday, March 3.

Bit gutted there is no entry for Duc Du Regniere - I thought he was starting to look well handicapped.

On a side note, it`s good to see on raglan road entered for the coral cup, I thought the horse had a career finishing injury.

Very surprised to not see Maljimar in there...

Fair point, but guessing the Cross Cuuntry might be his aim. Giving weight away probably not so difficult to do in a race where they potter around and thought he could have given the McManus horse a scare at the December meeting had he been kept closer to the pace.

He has no Festival entries. I've even checked the Cross Country. Honest.

He's being aimed at the National according to the trainer on RUK last week, but surely won't stay...

Shame, as hoped to get back some of last years losses in the X-Country

He only had one run over the X-Country course to sweeten him up, according to Jane Williams at the time. It's possibly significant that he's been tried over 28 and 31 furlongs this season, but he's not absolutely guaranteed to get a run at Aintree, even with 10'8. Simon won't be happy!

Un-original, but Bensalem has to be in the shake up. Having lost my ante-post bet on him for the RSA i'll be looking to re-coup in this.

Anyone know if Cappa Bleu is a likely runner?

Will The Package get into the race? Number 40 by my reckoning - could be borderline.
Phil Smith predicted that the cut would come a bit lower, saying he thought that those on 10'2 would almost certainly not get in, but that something on 10'3 might squeeze in. The Package looks safe as houses on 10'9.

Bensalem should have a clear chance of landing this and the trainer has indicated this is the place for him rather than the RSA. 7/1 favourite with Hills but this should be taken, as I don't reckon it will last long.

A big field of hardened handicappers will open-up the holes in Bensalem's jumping, imo. I couldn't have him at a single figure price.

I expect you're right, rory. I hadn't had a good look at those above him, but a ton of them are sure to come out.

If I'd been told a year ago that Bensalem would be running in this race, I wouldn't have believed it.

I'm another who would be concerned about his jumping.

Marlborough was only winner I've backed in this race, although Distant Thunder just missed out a few years ago.

I usually end up backing 2 horses for this race.

A few years back, i had Distant Thunder and Juveigneur and sat back in my chair announcing gleely I had them both as they were clear half way up the run in. Joe's edge came from out of the picture and even though I would have given you 20/1 he would have won a stride from the line, he got up.

Last year, I also backed 2, Maljimar and Nenuphar Collonges. Cue McCoy with ride of the season on Witchta Lineman.

Best to leave it go this year.

What i would say is Benselem can't jump, and the Package very rarely wins, and has gone up enough since beating the totherone.

Should be some value below these two.
