Thyestes Handicap Chase.

Disappointing post -this is a forum for adults who follow horse racing -most of whom like a bet.The language here is salty at worst. I spend a certain amount of time sitting in Churches and I see very little here that offends me.

I agree with nearly all of that, Luke, but there still have to be lines that shouldn't be crossed and I'm only being consistent - at least I think I am - in regard to this issue. I've used strong language on here myself, usually an indication pf frustration at what's happening in a race or whatever, but I genuinely do not like to see it used directly at someone. It's so unnecessary.

Slim is more than intelligent enough to find some other way of putting someone down, as are most people on here.

Logically, this will be a season target for Jordans. But, one would have hoped (expected?) to see JJ Slevin riding. And he's on Raffles (who, as already noted, appears to have a good chance on paper).
Jj Slevin is contracted to ride Raffles isn't he.
I've done Jordans.(also for the pertemps, which looked like a mistake now)

I think Robbi will get a good run from Velvet Elvis and I like Jayhawks two.
Intense Raffles and Shanbally kid.

You would have thought Willie wouldn't want to get penalties for his 150+ runners if they are to run in the National. So which one doesn't he think will stay the National trip.
At least Shanbally kid is only rated 137.

What amuses me is how selective various people are in their moral indignation.

When Slim first returned here, I had run ins with him and he called me all sorts - but as it was me that was perfectly alright.

Suddenly, in another scenario, it isn't.

What an utter shower of hypocrites.

Anyway, me and Slim quickly got over it - it's only words on a forum, ffs - and we've had a right laugh here for months.

He'd also be in my top-five (at the very least) most incisive contributors here.

The whole thing is a nonsense, rendered even more risible by those who clearly have no idea who the "Icy" persona (and a persona, an affectation, is all it is) is getting out of their prams about it all.

Just pretend he called me - not someone else - a **** and I guarantee you'll find it a lot easier to forgive him and call for his immediate reinstatement.

You bunch of holier-than-thou jokers.
Surely the people who run this forum are entitled to set some rules about conduct and to do their best to enforce them. In fact, they're bound to - unmoderated forums are normally hellholes.
If they in good faith decide someone should be suspended, that's the end of the story.

I'm making no criticism of Slim, as far as I could see what he said was meant to be a joke and was probably posted after a drink or two. But that doesn't matter, as long as you accept that the guy who made the decision was trying reasonably to enforce some reasonable standard. He can't get it right in everyone's eyes every time.

And if anyone thinks my opinion is worthless because I have been here less than a year and haven't tipped you a winner, you're welcome to ignore this post.

The worry with Shanbally is he seemingly needed the 4 miles at Punchestown to win, with the reasoning he liked it better jumping at the slower speed. The issue here is that even with heavy ground (if it is), there are a fair few that look likely to keep up the pace.

That said..

1. Shanbally wasn't that far behind at the Leopardstown finish. And maybe will be better for the run.
2. His 5 chase runs prior to the 4 miler were all at two and a half or less, so not surprising that he was struggling to jump well enough and go with them in those.
3. That effectively means we've only got the 4 miler to go on...so will this testing 3+ be enough to keep it all at a pace that he's comfortable at?
4. He's got a 3rd in a Coral Cup in his CV, indicating some class.

I'd have said 33 or higher would be pretty enticing to find out. But 25s SP could mean he's mid 30s/low-mid 40s on Betfair. That'll be interesting enough.

******

The one I don't want to win - but do confess to a small worry that he could go OK - is the Piper. I think he has a big race in him. But heavy ground at this distance will hopefully test the stamina far too much. Hoping for a back-of-midfield finish, then a big bang at either something over 3 on good, or maybe slightly less - for which there should be some tasty odds on offer.

I think that 2 + a half handicap chase at the festival would suit Pied Piper ?

The brother asked me about the race this evening. I replied:

I don’t want to back anything that doesn’t need to go up to get into the Grand National so I’m wary of anything with an OR of 141 or more (since the UK handicapper will add about 6lbs). The entries for Aintree aren’t out yet so we’re in the dark about what will be targeting this or a festival handicap or even one of the other Nationals, the Irish or the Scottish, maybe even the Whitbread. Conyers Hill looks a doubtful stayer so I’m letting him go. I also want the novices onside. The two first-season novices are both reserves so I’m waiting to see if either Mullins or Elliott takes something out to let them run and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Townend switched to Uncle Pat if Mullins did.

All that said, Mullins has won seven of the last 14 renewals, usually with his main rider in the saddle so Captain Cody is maybe not going to Aintree, especially if my long-held belief that Quai De Bourbon is their National horse for this year is right, and he’ll be the main bet.

Pied Piper is the one whose chase mark is significantly below his hurdles mark and therefore potentially thrown in. He could, in theory, afford to win this, take a hike in the ratings and still go to Aintree with every chance but the jockey booking is screaming ‘not today’.

You have under 100 posts and contributed nothing .....just saying.
Yet you see fit to criticise a man who has a proven track record for tipping winners.I'm not sure how many contributors on here have been directly quoted by Racing TV or RTE racing.

Firstly I popped back in as someone messaged me to say Slim had been banned for calling me a C**t and me being me was like what the devil did I do I haven't even been on there. So the first thing I'd say is it wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest I'm all for freedom of speech and sticks and stones philosophy. And before I go any further I quite like Slim.

It's very rare I'd disagree with you Luke but I think you're wrong having a pop at a new member just on the basis that he's fairly new and saying that as such his opinion doesn't count. He's also probably our youngest member and as far as forum longevity amongst a bunch of old farts such as us, his opinion may be more valid than most . Bar commenting that telling new members to f%*& off and calling people cunts every other word is fairly, at the very least strange if not generally frowned upon I can't see as he's actually one of the ones who was offended by it he has just shrugged it off and carried on regardless and probably labelled Slim as a bit of a weirdo.

Is it us or him ? He's banned from everywhere isn't he ? I get it, it's this "ICY persona" at what price? His tips on here mean nothing to me I find the amount of praise he gets in comparison to others on here triggers my gag reflex. But that's what self promotion can bring. I don't care if he's been quoted by RTV, I couldn't give a shit whether he's been a pro punter for however many years, I used to Squat and deadlift around 400lbs these days I struggle to carry the shopping to the car, I had years where I've cleared 30k profit betting in the main in 50's and 100's these days i'd be lucky to break even. What's in the past is in the past and "remember when" is the lowest form of conversation. At the end of the day what's he doing now ? Most recently he proved that although doing well himself that Reet was actually outperforming him on his own thread. As for knowledge of form himself he'd be behind plenty here, I reckon as I'd said there would be a huge differential between what he comes up with himself and what he draws from his networking of others ( Not that that isn't a talent in its own right). I don't see pages of thank you Reet when he puts up a winner he might get half a dozen. We have the likes of yourself and Treff who don't put up many bets but when either of you do they are never far from the mark, The likes of Ian, Euro and Reet who regularly put up winners. I haven't taken that much notice of new members but from just a quick scan the What are you backing today thread Wee man put up 11/2 and 16/1 winners in the same day and barely got a nod of approval from anywhere. Last time Outsider tracked his bets over a year he finished massively up. We're not short of people who put winners. There are probably plenty more not mentioned.

So when I say at what price and that I don't give a shit about Slims tips or anyone elses for that matter as I've never needed a golden tit to cling to what I will say is he could be a giant loss to a forum. I've loved reading his Substacks he has a real talent for writing. It's not just that but in general he does have things that are really worth saying his knowledge of markets, betting in general and sometimes he's more privvy to what's going on behind the scenes makes him an interesting guy all round.

You say that what is in effect a permanent ban ? Is that because you think he'd never be able to reign it in ? I found it very strange as to why Slim came back onto here in the first place what's in it for him ? Why do most of us post on a forum ? I'd suggest in the main to feel part of a group. People who talk the same strange language, of lengths, handicaps, furlongs, ground and prices. If you want to be part of the group then usually the group and the whole group decides what what counts as fair play. If Slim decides not to return that's down to him, some will be bothered, some more than others whilst I dare say some will say good riddance. But if the price to be paid is not saying the word C**T or telling new members to f%*& off or even not belittling other posters then it's not a huge price to pay for being in the group or for that matter in any group. If you're banned from every platform it's pretty isolating and you could puff your chest out and say i don't care if I'm banned, but if you don't care if you're banned why did you sign up in the first place? The funny side of it is when belittling members on here I dare say there are a number of members who could show him a pound for every penny he has but you wouldn't know because they don't need to rub it in peoples faces, people in general that live amazing lives but again don't need to show it off or belittle him. Also lets imagine that one of these new members who signs up is the most knowledgeable horse racing pundit ever known (after Ian of course ) and Slim tells him to f%*& off. New member thinks to himself what the bloody hell is this and never posts again. What if the new member is the next Walsworth full of comedic genius that makes members laugh every day. There's always a hidden cost to slamming a door in someones face.

Telling people to f%*& off and calling people cunts may have some sort of comedic effect maybe only for the right audience, but it seems to. But for how long ? How many times is it funny ? Sometimes in order to move forward in life you have to let some old parts of you die off. My opinion it for what its worth ( and for which he'd probably tell me to f%*& off and call me a c***) Is perhaps it's time to let the Icy persona die off. It's only really setting him back. He has something special, a gift with writing and ways of saying things and things that need saying but he's limiting his audience and his own potential by being a daft prick.

Hope you're all well and winning. I might return myself in the spring if you'll have me :)

Welcome Back Danny!!

Why have I "loved" Danny's post?

Because it's the most cogent counter-argument to my view I've read here by a distance and, well, it's Danny, innit?

Just great to see him back on here and making a post - even if it might be spring until the next one.

And I do have to say, like Danny, I have to smile when I put up winners at 45/1, 40/1, 40/1, 33/1 etc (plus a five and a half grand Trifecta ffs), apparently they're not proper "professional" bets and it's some 11/4 to 9/4 winner that really counts and sends the groupies into raptures.

There's more than a touch of "The Emperor's New Clothes" on the web - not just here - sometimes and in gauging someone's so-called "Betting CV" ask yourself who actually owns their home outright and who has reached middle age and is still renting (I paid my first mortgage off in my 30s, an event not entirely unconnected with landing a Tote Jackpot rollover from Cheltenham at Lingfield Park - another guesser's fluke, no doubt, I've been hearing bitter jealous bollocks like that for over 40 years).

But, tbh, I'm not really into "Who's Got The Biggest ****?" contests - it doesn't put any more money in my pocket - so I let all that nonsense pass without comment most of the time.

But nonsense is what it is - you can be sure of that.

Bar a firework display i do believe we had the Ian Davies congratulatory month after the 5000/1 trifecta Ian so you're not getting away with the I'm unappreciated and unloved on my watch :)

As for outstanding turns of phrase Chaumi and Luke's comment that Wandering sky light has contributed nothing, the night he offered to "re-start my star" I laughed so hard I broke a rib and these days I'll always take a good laugh over a winner.

Anyway I'll let you get to feeding the needy by finding the winner of this.

Did you actually break a rib?!
