Thyestes Handicap Chase.

The brother asked me about the race this evening. I replied:

I don’t want to back anything that doesn’t need to go up to get into the Grand National so I’m wary of anything with an OR of 141 or more (since the UK handicapper will add about 6lbs). The entries for Aintree aren’t out yet so we’re in the dark about what will be targeting this or a festival handicap or even one of the other Nationals, the Irish or the Scottish, maybe even the Whitbread. Conyers Hill looks a doubtful stayer so I’m letting him go. I also want the novices onside. The two first-season novices are both reserves so I’m waiting to see if either Mullins or Elliott takes something out to let them run and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Townend switched to Uncle Pat if Mullins did.

All that said, Mullins has won seven of the last 14 renewals, usually with his main rider in the saddle so Captain Cody is maybe not going to Aintree, especially if my long-held belief that Quai De Bourbon is their National horse for this year is right, and he’ll be the main bet.

Pied Piper is the one whose chase mark is significantly below his hurdles mark and therefore potentially thrown in. He could, in theory, afford to win this, take a hike in the ratings and still go to Aintree with every chance but the jockey booking is screaming ‘not today’.

I was planning to hold off until the morning to back Captain Cody due to the situation with the reserves but ended up fearing a potential gamble on it so decided to take a wee bit of the 8/1. I can always top it up tomorrow at shorter if the gamble does develop and if it ends up doing an impression of a barge in a storm I can at least accept the potential loss.

Edit - one more comment re Slim: we maybe shouldn't forget that this is not a blokes-only forum and women tend to find the 'c' word much more offensive than blokes. Jinnyj has asked us more than once to cool it on the use of the word and to continue to use it, especially directly towards an individual, is to hold her views in contempt. The same goes for all the other women on here who have expressed similar reservations.

Jinnyj, Moe and Trudij, and, going back far enough, Krizon have been forum stalwarts for as long as I can remember - I think Trudij might even have been a teenager when she first came on here - and deserve every respect. I don't recall any of them directing obscenities towards anyone on here. Mind you, I wouldn't advise anyone to get on the wrong side of Krizon. In my book she'd be long odds-on to win any slanging match with Slim.

Thank you Maurice. That's much appreciated.

Surely when we all joined TH we knew the rules and the consequences should we break the said rules.
MisterB is hardly an over zealous Moderator and I personally think that it is time we all show him the respect that he deserves especially as he only took the job on as a favour to his friends to keep the Forum going and many people reading some of the comments on here would say I don't actully need all this and walk away so be careful what you wish for.

Calling someone c&&t or telling them to f off means nothing to me seeing it on screen, but I wouldn’t be inclined to say it to newbies cos I tend to mean it when I say it and would happily say it to their face rather than in text.

Some people here I do view as pathetic c&&ts simple as that but I just avoid interaction.

But I’d say belittling people is a no no, and a worse offense than swearing in my eyes and does actually annoy me.

The whole Slim/Icy thing I don’t get, it all seems a bit Jordan/Katey Price to me

"never needed a golden tit to cling to" is no2 compared to something said when we were at Cheltenham but it’s not for the old women on here that are inclined flutter their lace hankies etc at things you hear in many a pub.

Just going to jump in real quick to explain a few things since there seems to be some misunderstandings and assumptions being made here.

For those of you referring to the "powers that be", please be realistic and understand that this forum has only ONE moderator. I have been running this forum since Colin passed as a favour to him and his family. There is virtually NO monetisation of this forum. It is free to be used by anyone - no membership fees - no spam machine - nothing.

All of what makes this work, the software license, the plugin subscriptions, the servers, the images, everything you see here is provided on my dime - no one else's. Just to be clear here - I am doing quite a bit for mere thank yous and appreciations in return. And that is alright by me.

Yes it's true I ran Casinomeister's forum for 27 years - at least there I had a few moderators to assist :p - but I was hands on with all member disciplinary actions (banishments, suspensions, etc.), and in my honest opinion, I did so in a very fair way.

One thing where I draw the line is when members resort to name calling, and another line in the sand is when one disrespects the forum. For me they almost go hand in hand.

Prancing around calling folks c***s and whatever might be a funny ha-ha to some, but it is not only out of line and flaming, but the public forum sinks to levels it should not be at. I am concerned that visitors (there are hundreds here daily) see that sort of nonsense and choose not to join. I should not have to explain this to any one of you.

As for Slim - I guess I should have made clear what the policies are in receiving disciplinary action. He had two major strikes - one was for his dishing out trollish remarks - the other was to try and sneak back in. So since these violations weren't fleshed out as a set of rules, that one should be on me. In fact, in order for me to manage the moderation on Talking Horses properly, the rules should be written out (like in my previous life as CM). This I will get done as soon as I can.

Another thing about being banned - I am not some dickish person going around being a dick. I have always tried to be fair - and a simple apology on a member's part is usually enough for me to strike the record clean.

So this is from the powers that be - I have asked for volunteers for moderators in the past - so far no takers. If you are familiar with Xenforo and have a decent amount of grey matter, feel free to contact me.

If you'd like to complain about what you don't like about the forum or the way I do things, please feel free to contact me just the same. Thank you.

MisterB, I think I speak for the vast majority on here in thanking you for keeping TH going and for your time freely given. Without Colin it seemed that all would be lost, but you have kept the ship running sweetly. Your effort in doing so is very much appreciated.

You are doing a sound job mate

I too was moderated when I was reported to MisterB for "stalking" a member because I actually posted a comment on a thread that he was on  however once I explained the situation to MisterB in a private message that he sent to both of us ( I engaged the other person did not openly) I was reinstatedstraight away.
