The Times have put up an archive of every issue from 1785 to 1985 on their website.

They reckon there's 20m articles on there, and it's all free to search and view. The amount of racing coverage on there must be absolutely massive. For example, Sea Bird's Derby:

Thanks Gareth. This would have saved me a ton of work over the years. Just looked up Tudor Minstrel's Guineas, which has details difficult to find elsewhere.

I've been looking at all the old reports on Shergar - and have also discovered that my family have never, ever done anything worth mentioning in The Times!

Yes, it's not that recent a trend!

George Lambton wrote much the same thing around 1920 in his wonderful book, "Men and Horses I have known".
