This is a thread intended for incidental comment on anything to do with the day's racing action.

Today's opening race at Gowran has some very unfamiliar names among the trainers, given that it's a race for 2yos: Tony Martin, Colin Bowe (two entries), Emmet Mullins and Willie Mullins (for Supreme Racing).

Haven't seen the race but RP comments in running suggest Sean Bowen gave Henllan Harri some ride at Newton Abbot

Great idea for a thread BTW

The Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury today looks a cracking renewal with a nice big field. Not seeing much of a punting angle although Custom Cut is tempting even with a penalty. Didn't run much of a race last time out but this is much more his trip.

It's a very open looking race. Kodi Bear deserves to be favourite but 11/4 looks too short given the depth of opposition.

Meanwhile there are four meetings on ATR tonight (aargh!). We all know WPM runners are always to be taken seriously at Tramore, where he is one of the directors; he has two runners tonight. I think he should win the last but wouldn't fancy Icy Reply at short odds in the first.

His strike rate at Tramore in the last five years in NH races is 42% (26 wins from 62 runners). Mind you it's not much of a pointer because he also has strike rates of 35% or better at these other tracks: Sligo (64%, 21 wins/33 runs!), Tipperary , Navan, Cork, Clonmel, Gowran, Kilbeggan, Limerick and Thurles.

Agree with all of that, but CC wouldn't want soft ground and it's hard to get a fix on what the going will be - come race time?

captain cat can repeat last years win imo..goes really well after a break..Spencer only ever ridden it once before..won on it easily..is a rare booking for stable with 3/8 strike rate

weather is turning poor there though..pretty fast ground yesterday..so will tale a bit of rain to ease it..the times will guide for me

Shifting Power for me.
A win for any of the ten that go to post wouldn't be a complete surprise so finding the potential winner isn't easy. The three year old, Kodi Bear, has a place in the Group One Dewhurst Stakes to his name and wasn't disgraced in the Group One Prix Jean Prat last time out. He still has scope for improvement and probably deserves his position at the head of the market. Last year's winner Captain Cat, Tullius, Custom Cut and Moohaarib are all respected with slight preference for Custom Cut, especially if the ground eases. Despite taking a walk in the early markets and Pulling Up last time out, we will side with Shifting Power. That last effort came at Epsom and it was clear that he didn't handle that track at all. He reappeared this season at Sandown where he was beaten just over three lengths by Custom Cut and that leaves him work to do to reverse that form. However Shifting Power is a grand stamp of a horse and it's likely it takes plenty of work and racing to get him to the peak of his powers. With improvement expected he followed Sandown by winning a Listed race quite comfortably at Windsor. He was beaten three lengths into fourth by Night Of Thunder in last season's 2000 Guineas and was second to Kingman, albeit beaten five lengths, in the Irish version. A close second in the Prix Jean prat made it a hat-trick of good performances in Group One events. He falls short of winning at that level but he is capable of breaking his duck in this grade. He has plenty of physical scope, travels well and the stamina on his Dam's side suggests he may stay a little further in time. Two of his Group One efforts last season came in testing conditions so he is not ground dependent.

Good performance by Seamus Duracks bumper horse Nicely Indeed at Fontwell but what about Gary Moores treble all under different jocks. Expect I would have been on if the boys were riding. Cest la vie

Good to see Will Clarke having his first ride as a pro at Fontwell today - he's ridden for a few friends of mine and is a nice lad.

Didn't get too many opportunities in p2p's but had a winner in his first season in 2013/14 and at least one last season, possibly should have had a Hunter Chase win at Fontwell in May and pleased to see he's joined Chris Gordon, taking the same route at Tom Cannon.

Roger Varian (Princess Loulou) and John Gosden (Deuce Again) each has a runner in the Prix de Pomone at Deauville today but I find it hard to gauge what chance they have today. Neither has had a recent run but that remark applies to a lot of today's field. It's more a race for horses starting preparations for the autumn season than a mid-season race.

A painfully honest interview on ATR just now with Andrew Mac, explaining that he's been riding less well than he used to because of back pain and not getting the rides any more. I hope he does very well as a trainer.

Andy Mac was the lunchtime speaker in a hospitality suite I got invited to at Cheltenham a few years back. A knowledgeable and articulate man I wish him well
