Tom Scudamore's judgment of pace

Did Ruby ride a good race on Champagne Fever? Or did he gift it to Scu? On The Western Warhorse.

Dynaste ride was very good. Very.

Interested as to what you saw I'm missing? I thought he was on a horse 10 pounds better than the rest (with his two main form rivals falling in a heap) and he only had to avoid trouble to win easily - I thought it a steering job (though obviously not as much as one as Ballynagour).

Ballynagour ride was actually not that impressive - why hit a horse running away with it three times after the last . I assume for once the Pipes were not worried about his handicap mark .

The one thing he did right on Ballynagour was to jink inside a rival that looked like carrying him wide on the turn at the top of the hill.

As it turned out, Rishi could have won on it so well handicapped was it.

His father rode some absolute stinkers too - wasn't it him who went for home 3 out on Artifice in the Mackeson and managed to get caught on the line - a bit of patience and Artifice would have bolted up .

Tom S was back to his usual form on Fair Loch at Kempton.

Not sure about his judgement of pace, but I think Scu must be smoking something if he thinks Dynaste is the best 2 and a half mile horse in the country (according to the RP today).

Cue Card and Sprinter Sacre would both beat him head in chest. So would Captain Chris.

Agreed both with FU and suny's posts. Gordon Elliott was very prescient in that preview of being unkeen on King's Palace because he feared the jockey would not get the fractions right.

On the Thursday night our group in Cheltenham our group was remarking what a rotten Cheltenham it had been for Davy Russell, that Noel Meade was in decline, Gigginstown were having a quiet time, Friday was not traditionally a big day for Irish winners. Go back a few days earlier and we would have been making similar observations about Jimmy Culloty and Scudamore.

Bryan Cooper, Ruby Walsh, Daryl Jacob were all on top of the world before their falls. There has never been a meeting that demonstrates so clearly how quickly fortunes can change.

Well he must be racings best kept secret then?

No doubt we will see rides from big stables appearing on the back of Cheltenham?

Maybe Dickie Johnson can pick up a few spares after Goullanes???

I'm impressed that you're able to bolster (no pun intended) your anti-Scudamore argument using races from more than 30 years ago, so I thought I'd dig the relevant evidence out:

Artifice chinned by Fifty Dollars More

FWIW, I thought this was a good ride to almost steal a quality contest on a horse who simply didn't get home. He'd have been beaten further if he'd delayed his effort, imo, as Artifice's greatest asset was his speed, and utilising that when he did enabled him to poach a big lead against stouter stayers. Had Scudamore delayed his effort, Artifice would still have been a non-stayer, but would have been level with Fifty Dollars More when the tank ran dry, rather than ten lengths up. I'd certainly prefer the ride on the runner-up to the one given to the favourite!

Whilst I often see Scudamore being on a horse as a negative - I was impressed with his honesty and sportsmanship in the Gold Cup stewards enquiry.

I couldn't disagree with you more - Artifice out jumped the others three out and on a confirmed 2 miler Scudamore rushed off in front and the horse fell in a hole on the run in - a little more patience and keeping something in the tank and FDM would not have got close .
