No its not, it only becomes racist when used in a derogatory way.

Is it possible to use in a non-derogatory way? I'm not sure the word has any meaning outside of it's derogatory use.

The Pro it is about perception . It is perceived as racist . Much racism in this country is not intentional but it doesn't make it any less discriminatory

For example Mr X is discriminated against at work due to stereotyping as an African he might be more likely to commit fraud ( don't laugh this is based on an actual case involving a london locla authority in the last three years !!!) although his bosses like him and do not intend to discriminate .

It is stil discrimination whether or not it is intended . Thus whether Merlin intended or not to be racist does not make it not racist to use the term Paki although it does aggravate it .

From dictionary.com

Paki ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pk)
n. Chiefly British Offensive Slang pl. Pak·is
Used as a disparaging term for a person from Pakistan or neighboring countries or for the descendant of such a person.

I bet the Pakistani man would if he heard you.
Im sure he would, but i would never say that to a pakistani person and im sure you would'nt either.

Well to me that statement is aimed at me !! to try and belittle so I would appreciate it if its kept to an advisory statement... like I stated its acceptable down here that word........ but if it offends you or and other people I have refrained from using it again….. by using hyphenation….. thanks.

but I consider it as not being racist or derogatory!! and yes familiarity may just breed contempt… i.e. I could say it here and no offence is taken, but say travel 50 miles away and it then it becomes racist and offensive...........so yes I will tow the line on this if it offends people.. it was not posted in its original format to offend only has a joke regards my curry making......

My statement was'nt aimed at you merlin and i certainly was'nt trying to belittle you, i think from the little time ive been here that your a excellent poster who speaks alot of sense, It was just a comment to try and calm the thread down and my personnal veiw on the matter. ;)

yes sorry PRO the thread I posted was to PAUL yes its like I said its about time this forum got back to some normality and the snide remarks by a few on here stopped by them not by a moderator they know who they are...........

' like I say its acceptable down here..........."

Merlin I would like you to qualify "down here", it certainly isn't acceptable with me.

Im sure most people have used the word Paki and not meant it in a racist way.

People just say it dont they, "im going to the paki shop" thats not racist to me, it might be to others though.

Does that make it right?
IM not saying that it does make it right, what im saying is people use the word that arent racist too. Im the biggest Kumars at no 42 fan there is, Indians, Pakistani who cares there all humans.

Here is what the House of Lords said in the lead case of Nagarajan

I turn to the question of subconscious motivation. All human beings have preconceptions, beliefs, attitudes and prejudices on many subjects. It is part of our make-up. Moreover, we do not always recognise our own prejudices. Many people are unable, or unwilling, to admit even to themselves that actions of theirs may be racially motivated. An employer may genuinely believe that the reason why he rejected an applicant had nothing to do with the applicant's race. After careful and thorough investigation of a claim members of an employment tribunal may decide that the proper inference to be drawn from the evidence is that, whether the employer realised it at the time or not, race was the reason why he acted as he did...............Members of racial groups need protection from conduct driven by unrecognised prejudice as much as from conscious and deliberate discrimination. ..................a high rate of failure to achieve promotion by members of a particular racial group may indicate that 'the real reason for refusal is a conscious or unconscious racial attitude which involves stereotyped assumptions' about members of the group.
