I was trawling through an Ordnance Survey map of West and Mid Sussex this morning, and found two horsey references: DANEHILL, and KINGSFOLD (as in PET), which lies on the Dorking Road north of Upper Chickens, part of several foodie local place names, with Hungry Down just south of Pease Pottage, and Starvemouse Farm.

Along with any amount of hursts, tyes, woods and ways, some farmhouses provide cracking names: Bursteye (ow!), Possessionhouse, Scratchings, and Sods.

Meanwhile, there's much sniggering to be had courtesy of Scotland Knob, Flat Dossers, Titty Hill, Buttock's Bank and Shagswell woods. Two places sound sinister: Doomsday Green and Screechhouse Copse, while the more benign are Shufflesheeps, Smockfarthing, Skein Winders and Ups and Downs.

Are there any strange place names around your way?

Perhaps they refer to crops failing in the distant past? If you live at some of these addresses, I wonder how you get on with overseas call centres, who probably think you're just being rude? My favourite so far is Flat Dossers, which sounds like a student bed-sit. (Sorry, students!)

If I'm ever in London for the weekend I park outside somebody's nice house in Cockfosters and get the tube in to town. A leafy suburb so far untroubled by the Traffic Warden.

Staffordshire can rival those with Loggerheads and Tittensor (ouch). A friend of mine reports having recently visited Piddlehoe, after a trip to historic Tolpuddle... just a shame that Looe was a bit too far afield to add to her lavatorial collection!

I can remember being convulsed with laughter as a kid at such placenames as Much Piddle but, being useless at geography can't remember whether it's in the West Country or Herefordshire - probably neither.

That's my neck of the woods! Loggerheads is a very rahhhh type place where the public school buses do a roaring trade and Tittensor must have more speed cameras than any other village in the UK.

I am soon Brighton bound though Kri!

You'll soon find that Brighton has more double yellow lines, parking charges, traffic wardens etc. than anywhere else in the UK Dave.

Great decision, Gamla! Brighton, where we boast Devil's Dyke and Dyke Road - we love our dykes down 'ere! IS isn't wrong about the parking problems, unfortunately. But if you buy or rent a house or flat with its own parking space/s, it doesn't matter! Trouble is that so many 4-storey terraces are now four or five flats or even more rented rooms, so there's a huge squeeze for cars. Motorbike's a better conveyance around here. Shall you be gracing Brighton r/c with your presence??

I lived in Newcastle under Lyme and then Harriseahead (aka 'Arry 'ead) for a few years, Gamla, before wending my way down the M23. Still got pals up there and rellies in Cheshire, in Lostock Gralam.

What a very freaky post....

I was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme and lived there until I was 18, my family all still live there.

Funnily enough, I'm actually going to be living on Dyke Road itself which is a huge coincidence!

Tis a small world.

I would imagine I'll drop by the racecourse one day, such a shame the racing there is so low grade. I was going to bring my car down but suspect I may sell it!

I think you will find that Exmouth holds that title,
They even charge blue badge holders at the loo's you not only have to pay to use them but pay to park,

I think Senen Oaks needs to be renamed as there are only five,

Gamla - after those remarks about the quality of racing at Brighton - there's no way you're getting into the course!

Poor GS, relegated to sellers. If Brighton were NH, at least you'd have a bumper and a hunter chase!

Jumps races at Brighton, on that downhill corkscrew track, would be a fine spectacle. Fallers would be passing the winning post head over heels.

Well, they're trying new ideas to sell racing!

I don't follow the Flat, so had no idea about the layout of the course - jumping only for the very brave or barking (Mr Carberry, perhaps?)
